This is not one of our typical Secretplaces but we just had to include it for the position (in the fishing village of Nerano, on the very tip of the Amalfi peninsula) and for the charm and friendliness of the owner, Guglielmo.
Guglielmo has taken on old building from the 1700s with its lemon and olive terraces (now all certified as biological) and restored the property to make four apartments, simply but comfortably done.
A swimming pool, large garden with children’s play area, gazebo and lots of terraces hidden here and there mean this is a great place to come if you have young ones. The village is fairly traditional and not as glamourous as nearby Amalfi or Positano which we found was actually a nice surprise, being less frequented by tourists you can have much more of it to yourself. The Quattro Passi (Four Steps) restaurant down by the seaside has earnt its chef a Michelin star and rightly so – try the seafood pasta!
So how are the apartments? They all have the necessary equipment to try your own hand at cooking the local specialities as well as satellite TVs, music systems and DVD or VHS players on request. The courtyards are available for all to relax in the evening, enjoy an aperitivo or simply to relax “round the house” when you don’t want to go venturing too far.
Il Brigante (3) is the smallest of the four at 50 metres squared, consisting of bathroom, a dining area in the kitchen, 1 double room and 1 small single, both with views out to sea and the islands from where the apartments take their names.
Il Gallo Lungo (4) is a little larger, 60 metres squared and has a large lounge/cooking area, bathroom, a small outdoor terrace, 1 double and 1 twin bedroom.
La Rotonda (2+2) is on the first floor and similar in size to Il Gallo Lungo. The entrance gives on to a small lounge area with a sofa bed leading on to the bathroom, small cooking and dining area and a private balcony with seaviews. A double bedroom leads off from the lounge.
Vetara (4) is the largest of the apartments at 90 square metres and is located on the first floor. The entrance opens to the lounge/dining area with a fireplace and cooking corner. The twin room has a bathroom with shower, the double a bathroom with bathtub. What really sets this apartment off though is the terrace with views over the gardens to the sea.
The apartments are not about sophistication, trendiness, design or chic style. They are all superbly clean and homely spaces, ideal for a break to explore the rich history and wonderful nature in the area. Guglielmo was one of the loveliest hosts we met on this review trip and his love for Nerano and the Amalfi coast in general really shows. He is enthusiastic and knowledgeable and always ready to give a helping hand with planning boat trips across to Capri or picnics up in the hills. Great job Guglielmo!

Where to begin? Culturally speaking, this is one of the richest regions in the world with outstanding Roman remains (Pompeii, Herculaneum) mixing with one of the best preserved ancient Greek temples (Paestum).
Caravaggios in Naples along with the National Archeological Museum there are both worth a visit (using the Circumvesuviana train from nearby Sorrento, this is easier than it sounds).
Capri, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento all provide for various levels of sophisticated sunning, shopping and general relaxation.
Nerano itself is one of the more authentic villages along the coastline and has remained one of the less visited though at weekends Italians in the know do tend to come here to escape from the crowds in Amalfi. Typical of Italy, the beach has been portioned off into different “concessions” which means you will have to pay, the up-side though is that it is clean and Guglielmo has negotiated special rates with the operators.

Capodichino (Naples´ airport) is the closest at a distance of approximately 40 miles (65km). The airport is well-served by all of the major airlines fly as well as low-cost carriers such as Easyjet.
A car is useful if you want to explore the area, however, public transport does mean you can get too and from Naples, Amalfi and Sorrento relatively easily and cheaply. If driving, whether from Rome or from Naples Capodichino airport, take the A3/E45 motorway south towards Salerno for 18km. Leave the motorway at the exit for Castellamare di Stabia in the direction of Sorrento. This road, the SS145, continues for 21km until Sorrento itself which you should not enter but rather take the exit on the left hand side (follow indications for Positano) in the centre of Metà di Sorrento. This road leads up to the “saddle” which divides the peninsula from the Amalfi side and the Sorrento side. Keep driving until you see signs for Nerano and Marina del Cantone, follow these along and up before you start heading downhill towards the village itself. You will already have advised Guglielmo of your arrival time and a meeting place so he can introduce you to your apartment.
