What happens when you get an urbane family from the big city following their dream of setting up a little bit of paradise in this part of the world? Well, if things are done as they should be - that is with passion, style and sophistication - the end result should be something like the Casas do Sal.
In short, the “Salt Houses”, to give it the Portuguese name, mixes the charm and absolute pleasure of southern rural Portugal with the refinement of owners who possess undoubted good taste. We like to call it rustic sophistication and this description fits the Casas do Sal right down to a tee. So despite the simple pastoral idyll, the whole place is still imbued with a trendy and really cool feel, yet still perfectly capable of offering superb family holidays.
here is no contradiction in being integrated within a two thousand hectare area, some 100km south of Lisbon, where peace and tranquility rein, yet still being excellent for a family holiday where kids can run amok. For this, there is even a children’s play room where they can get rid of all their energies, leaving parents to enjoy the atmosphere, do a bit of tending to the horses or take a refreshing "caipirinha" in the pool.
Talking of which, guests will definitely impressed by the wall the end of the pool. Not only is it a pretty piece in itself, but at night it doubles up as a super wide screen onto which movies are shown – a great little touch, and typical of the imaginative way things are done here. The large suites and apartments – there are four of each – maintain a minimalist approach with colour themes running throughout which don’t take anything away from the surroundings. Some of the accommodations are also reserved for non smokers.
With all of this going on, it’s unsurprising this is one of our favourite accommodations in the region. Please note: Public areas, including the childrens play area, are out of bound to children after 21 hours. |

| From Lisbon, take the A2 motorway in direction of the South (this will entail crossing either one of the two bridges of the Tagus river). Leave at the ALCACÉR DO SAL/TORRÃO exit. When you get to the roundabout with the traffic lights (where there is an old bridge to the Algarve), turn left. Cross the town and head straight on. You will come to an exit on the right for TORRÃO and carry on for some 4 km and turn right for SANTA CATARINA. Here from a small bridge, turn left inb direction of ALCAÇOVAS and go on for some 8km. You will then see the signs for the Casas do Sal. Follow the sign from hereon in. |

"We stayed 8 days at this accommodation. They were wonderful, we rested because it is a place to forget the stress and enjoy nature. The environment is ideal, and the house and everything that surrounds it is pampered until the last detail (you can get a body massage outdoors, you can enjoy chill out music while sunbathing on the pool or watch a movie at night on a special screen or simply look at the horses that walk alongside the farm, at night you can contemplate the stars and the sound of crickets. Children have a room full of games with everything they can dream of and will never ever get tired of being there.
All this service for you and there’s always have a friendly smile which made us feel home from home. The only thing that I think should improve is to serve dinner until later that you serve a maximum at 19:30 and for us that is too early."
