In the western coast of Cantabria there are two of the most valuable cultural treasures you could find in this region: Santillana del Mar and the caves of Altamira.
Santillana del Mar, 30 kilometers from Santander, is an alive museum, with a medieval village developed around the Santa Juliana's colegiata, although most of its constructions correspond to the diverse architectural contributions of the XIV to the XVIII centuries. The historical-artistic group of Santillana cannot be visited other ways but on foot.

Approx. 2 kilometers from Santillana there is another great artistic treasure of Cantabria: the universally famous Caves of Altamira. Discovered in 1879 by Marcelino Sanz of Sautuola and his daughter María, they have been declared by UNESCO part of the Mandkind´s patrimony. The cave, 300 meters long, contains about 150 engravings, and it is a perfect artistic expression of the paleolithical man. The paintings are polichromed with the help of natural pigments that have been well conserved from the quaternary age; and the figures of bisons and deers are splendidous.

Santillana del Mar Zoo
Located nearby a water-course (next to the entrance of Santillana if you drive in from Puente San Miguel), it constitutes a biological complex where hundreds of species cohabitate in a singular environment; from the bison to the tiger and from reptiles to butterflies (whose enclosure is exuberant in vegetation and coloring).
Its didactic and investigating dimension is important, with several conservation and reproduction programs with species in danger of extinction.

In Cantabria:
Influences brought by Mozarabic peoples (Christians who lived in the Arabic territories) are left in Cantabria, such as, from the X century, churches with decorative reminders of Muslim construction, like Santa María in Lebeña, San Román de Moroso, Helguera or San Martín de Elines. But in fact, at the end of this century, when the Christians had managed to reconquest and repopulate the meseta, Cantabria, now distanced from the centres of power (Kings of Leon and Counts of Castile), faded into the background.
In the XI and XII centuries, with the Europeanisation that the dynasty of Navarra and the Kings Alfonso VII and VIII of Castile brought, our valleys were filled with Romanesque churches. Four monasteries (Santillana del Mar, Santa Maria de Piasca, Cervatos, and San Martín de Elines) are some excellent examples of this style and they exercised the economic power and the influences of their respective estates and domains.
Art in the XVII-XIX centuries includes important Baroque churches that are adorned with altarpieces which are popular or from good workshops. At the end, with regarding that which is architectonic a neo-regionalism arose whose main representatives were Rucabado and Riancho.
