Castello di Bibbione
San Casciano Val di Pesa - Florence - Tuscany
Cottage/Apartment
Number of rooms: 12

Going just beyond the “standard” villas in Tuscany, this Castle retreat is something quite out of the ordinary. Machiavelli bought it in 1511 when it was already 500 years old and its defensive position on top of one of Chianti’s hills gives it stunning views and plenty an opportunity to explore the fields and woods or simply relax in the comfort of the gardens and let your eyes wander over the 200 acres of olive groves and vines bearing next year’s Chianti Classico.

The Apartments and Cottages
The estate is essentially a fortified hamlet made up of many different sized houses. These are now divided into cottages and apartments for weekly rental, Saturday to Saturday (Mid and High Seasons) or for periods of 4 days and more in Low Season (January – March, November - December, excluding Christmas and the New Year. Please contact us for details concerning Low Season rentals).

The rentals are on a self-catering basis so each unit has a fully equipped kitchen, hence the normal rentals do not include breakfast though this is available at an extra 10 Euros per person.

The Castle was awarded special historical status since 1913 and as such the restoration has been especially sensitive, respecting the structures and their materials, the wooden beams of the ceilings for example are still there and the tiles on the roofs are antique handmade terracotta. On the inside the decoration is simple but very homely with antique kilims, rustic furniture and traditional floor tiles meaning cool in the summer and cosy in the winter.

We show below the apartments and cottages with a brief description of each. When we write (4+3) we mean that the apartment has 2 double rooms for a total of 4 persons and sofa beds for a further 3. Please don’t hesitate to ask us for further information or take a look at the photographs and the prices.

FRULLACCHIA (2: 34 square metres)
Sitting room with kitchen area (with dishwasher), double bedroom and bathroom. On the ground floor of one of the village houses. Views from the bedroom across the Chianti hills.

I CIPRESSI (2: 44 square metres)
Living room with small kitchen area. Double bedroom, bathroom. A first floor apartment with views across the Pesa valley. Lots of light.

LA QUERCIA (2+1: 47 square metres)
On the second floor of one of the village farmhouses, it is the living room here that sets the apartment off. Views across into the Pesa valley. One sofa bed in the living room with kitchen area, one double bedroom, bathroom.

Il POGGIO (2+2: 52 square metres)
This apartment is on the ground floor of the Villa Il Poggio and is only available by itself during Low Season (January – March, November - December, excluding Christmas and the New Year) as during the remainder of the year it is rented together with Villa Il Poggio, see below. Situated close to the Castle but surrounded by green areas and views across the Chianti hills. A small kitchenette allows preparation of simple meals. Double bedroom, bathroom and two single sofa beds in the living room.

IL TIGLIO (2+2: 52 square metres)
A first floor apartment, Il Tiglio has excellent views from the double bedroom, two bathrooms, a lounge with a double sofa bed and a kitchen.

IL CASTELLO (2+2: 55 square metres)
This apartment is situated in the castle’s first and second floors. The lounge with double sofa bed, fireplace and kitchen area is found on the first floor with views into the courtyard of the castle whilst upstairs are the double bedroom and bathroom with jacuzzi and views across the Pesa valley.

CASA GIOTTO (2+2: 87 square metres)
The apartment is on the first floor of one of the farmhouses. It has a large living room which is separated into the kitchen area, lounge with fireplace, a dining area and two single sofa beds. The double bedroom looks across to the main entrance of the castle whilst the bathroom has the added treat of a jacuzzi.

LA TORRETTA (2+2: 70 square metres)
This apartment was once one of the towers and in fact has a wonderful position surrounded by a private garden complete with barbecue for cooking outside on those warm Tuscan evenings. Both the kitchen and living rooms are on the ground floor where the latter has a double sofa bed and a fireplace. Upstairs is the master bedroom and bathroom.

LE GINESTRE (4+3: 119 square metres)
This is a two storey farmhouse with views across the valley and into the olive groves surrounding the house. Two double bedrooms are located on the first floor together with a bathroom and a single sofa-bed in the hall. Downstairs is the living room with a double sofa bed, dining room, fully equipped kitchen, a further bathroom and access to the private garden.

VILLA IL POGGIO (6+2: 300 square metres)
This apartment is only available by itself during Low Season (January – March, November - December, excluding Christmas and the New Year) as during the remainder of the year it is rented together with Il Poggio apartment in the combination shown below.

The villa is a wonderful idea for those in a larger group and offers a spacious lounge area with fireplace on the first floor as well as a second lounge with a double sofa bed, large kitchen, bathroom, dining room and a loggia providing a wonderful al fresco dining experience. On the second floor (the villa takes up the first and second floors of the restored farmhouse) is a sitting room, three double bedrooms and two bathrooms.

VILLA IL POGGIO + IL POGGIO and private swimming pool (8+4: 352 square metres)
During Mid and High Season (April to early September, Christmas and New Year), the Villa is only rented together the smaller Il Poggio on the ground floor giving you exclusivity over the whole villa building and the swimming pool which becomes yours for the week!

Please Note: All rentals are on a weekly basis. We show per day prices for the 7 days. If you are interested in one of the cottages or apartments in Low Season, please contact us as special rates apply.

ll Activities
There shouldn’t really be a shortage of things to do what with a swimming pool (May to September, this pool is in addition to the one in exclusive use of Villa Il Poggio), mountain bikes, games for the younger ones and ancient woodlands surrounding the Castle meaning whether you are here for a strict regime of comfortable chair-bound relaxation or rather fancy strolling through the olive groves you will find something quiet wonderful to do.

You may be in a medieval castle but you are still only 40 minutes from Florence and 45 from Siena. In fact the position couldn’t really be better seeing as you have a mix of wonderful Renaissance cities and smaller towns typical of Chianti and central Tuscany including San Gimignano at very close call, not forgetting those scenes of rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves.

Excellent eating in the area together with some very interesting estates to sample both the classical wines of the Chianti region together with the rule-busting Tignanello mean that Il Castello di Bibbione is located in the centre of a very rewarding eno-gastronomic region.

ll Tips & Getting There
The key piece of information here is the BARGINO exit close to San Casciano from the Superstrada between Florence and Siena. If you are coming from Siena you are already on it so no problems there.
If, however, you are coming along the A1 motorway (ie Rome or Milan directions) use the FIRENZE CERTOSA exit to get on to the Siena - Florence superstrada and follow signs for Siena. As above, take the BARGINO exit close to San Casciano. The Castello di Bibbione is indicated as you leave the junction.

Direction from Pisa:

you have to take the highway Pisa-Livorno and you have to exit at Ginestra F.na, then you follow indication San Caciano in Val di Pesa and when you are in the village you have to follow indication Bargino, before to arrive in Bargino you have tu turn left at Castello di Bibbione" you drive up and on your left there is the castle.
