| The adjectives singing the praises of El Nobo are many and varied: “a paradise garden”, “an amazing house”, “a glorious house” “one of the finest swimming pools I have ever seen”, to name but a few. All are correct and present, for this Spanish villa is a combination of magnificent location, beautiful architecture and decoration of the highest order. First the location: it is superbly set in 11 acres of almond and citrus orchards below the mountain village of Gaucin in the Ronda mountains. The views towards Gibraltar and the mountains of Africa are spectacular and on looking out one can also see the pretty whitewashed houses of Gaucin. Secondly, the house itself: El Nobo is constructed in typical Andalusian style and even comes with a Moorish courtyard and fountain. The drawing room, with its huge doors is magnificent and there are three other terraces for outdoor dining and sunbathing, as well as generously proportioned bedrooms with ceiling fans. There is also a separate cottage sited on its own promontory. All furnishings are top notch and include under floor heating, satellite fax and e-mail. The large cottage sleeps 2, has south and west facing balconies and comes with its own plunge pool with high-powered jet. Thirdly, the swimming pool and garden: magnificently set below the house with cascades and paddling end. The garden is striking, slightly rocky and terraced with shady trees, parasols and lawns. They have a new house 150 sq meter Villa with infinity pool two rooms “ a beautiful villa with fantastic views tucked into the hill” |

Lugar de Hundidero-Gato. Gaucin is a spectacularly beautiful mountain village commanding sweeping views to Gibraltar and the Rif mountains of north Africa. Derived from the Arab word, guazan (strong rock), the village is perched on the crest of the Sierra del Hacho, and due to its key strategic position was once a major Roman settlement. Its magnificent castle, Castillo del Aguila (Eagle's Castle) dates from this era and was later expanded by the Arabs into a fortress. As one would expect from the name, it is not unusual to seek eagles circling the towers here, while kestrels regularly nest in the walls of the mediaeval convent. The centre of the village is a tangle of narrow, twisting streets and was once a haven for brandy and tobacco smugglers who travelled through the surrounding hills. Up until recently, most houses had no running water and one light bulb. A far cry from the refurbished houses today which boast every mod con. The locals are apparently somewhat bemused by the mad foreigners who insist on keeping the old beams and Ronda tiled floors! |

Alternatively, take the coastal autovia N 340 eastbound direction Malaga, and then the toll road AP7 (peaje) to exit km 142 marked Casares/Gaucin and follow A 377 to Gaucin as indicated below.
From the Southeast, ie Malaga, Marbella.
Drive westwards along the coastal autovia N 340 and then the AP7 toll road (peaje) past Estapona to the next exit -km 142 marked Casares/Gaucin A 377. Take the A377 direction Casares and continue, past the Casares turn off, for some 25 km up hill and down dale eventually climbing steeply till you reach Gaucin arriving at a T junction. Turn right into the village.
From the north, ie Ronda, Madrid.
Leave Ronda on southbound A 369 marked Gaucin Algecieras. 34 kms of windy beautiful mountain road brings you to Gaucin. At petrol station turn left into village. Gaucin to the house Proceed into village leaving the builders yard and then the old convent on your right, follow the main winding road for about 500 meters. Some 50 meters before entering a small triangular square and just after the Hotel Rural on the right, take an acute turning to your right signed “Camino de Gibraltar”. (If you have a large car it might be wise to proceed into the small square and turn about on your tracks then taking the road 50 meters now on your left). Follow this concrete road downhill out of the town when it becomes a dirt road. Go on down the steepish hill until the track levels out and rises slightly to the brow of a mound. Turn left through the yellow painted gateposts.
La Herradura guests should turn hard left after entering the gate posts. Follow the track below the tennis court and park above the house. Do not drive down the concreted S to the house entrance.
