If you’re looking for something off the beaten track in Spain then El Somni could well be it. Lovers of silence, nature and art will feel entirely at home here, nestled in an undiscovered medieval village underneath the Gavarres National Park and just 20 minutes from the coves of the Costa Brava that haven’t, thankfully, been subjected to mass tourism.

This is a story about a building from the 1600s and its owners, a little more recent. An (Italian) boy meets a Catalan girl when he opens his exhibition in Barcelona. Boy and girl fall in love, travel around Britain staying in traditional B&Bs and return to Spain to find a little piece of paradise in a village that hasn’t heard of tourists. They restore the house they’ve bought and create six beautiful bedrooms adding much of their own contemporary art as well as works by other Catalan artists. Dense and deep colours in the house create a sense of warm, home-like comfort. In the garden they add a patio with loungers (a great little spot to take breakfast or an aperativo later in the evening) and let the bougainvillea grow and spread around the terrace. Views are of the mountains around and the Romanesque convent of Sant Miquel dating back to 904.

Sandro and Anna have put their all into what they call their Bed and Breakfast (though this is not just the standard B&B but something much more special, along the lines of a design hotel in miniature though more relaxed and more honest too). To top it off the house is in a village, Cruïlles, that absolutely does not cater for tourists; it’s all been left for you pretty much as it ever was.

Please note that regardless of the price shown, if the weekend is a bank holiday or “puente” in Spanish, High Season tariffs apply.

ll Activities
As we said, there are beaches close by that are not what you’d expect from the Costa Brava – these are bays, often small coves, that haven’t the infrastructure or the desire to attract significant numbers of people and as such they are far better preserved and much lower in visitor numbers than further south. Many of these can be reached within 20 minutes, others just a little further, in half an hour. Look out for names such as Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Aiguablava, Tamariu, Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell, Palamós, Pals and L'Estartit.
The village of Cruïlles itself is a listed medieval site, with its wall, the square beside the church of Santa Eulàlia, the tower of the castle of the Marquis of Cruïlles i Peratallada and the hermitage of Mare de Déu de l'Esperança.
Adjacent to the village is the Gavarres National Park with beautiful landscape and possibility for trekking, mountain biking and horse-riding.
Baix Empordà also has lots to do with elegant settings and Romanesque monuments; La Bisbal Ceramic School and Museum; archaeological remains in Ullastret and Empúries, and the museum/theatre that Dali created in nearby Figueres, the largest piece of surrealist artwork in the world.
Golf too is also available close to Cruïlles and of course water sports are easily arranged.
This region of Spain is also famous for its cuisine, having the luxury of both sea and mountain to provide all kinds of ingredients as well as centuries of experience in Catalan trading routes.

ll Tips & Getting There
The hotel is midway between the sea and Girona, approximately halfway between Barcelona and the French border. The AP7/E15 motorway passes close to Girona and whether arriving from the north or the south it is advisable to use Exit 6. Take the C66 for 24km until La Bisbal d'Empordà and then take the first exit at the roundabout to follow the GI-664 for just 1.5km until you arrive in Cruïlles. Ahead is the first corner on this till now straight road. The road bends 90 degrees to the right, take the last turning on the right, after the corner, and immediately the first left. This is Carrer del Raval and you’ve arrived!
