The stylish Estalagem Jardins do Lago comes with a rich history and pedigree. Built in the 18th century, during the Napoleonic wars it was home to General Beresford, commander of British forces on the island and his magnificent sideboard is a reminder of his stay there. It wasn’t just chosen for its pedigree, but also for its location on one of the hills surrounding Funchal and overlooking 6 acres of beautiful botanical gardens. In fact, the gardens alone are worth a stay in our opinion brimming, as they are, with wonderful examples of rare species and old trees that come from all over the world, whilst also boasting a lovely semi covered swimming pool, as well as being the home for the last 45 years of “Colombo” the giant tortoise. Its many pleasure do not stop there. Inside the refurbishment to transform it into a truly luxury accommodation has kept the high standard and ambience of its previous life as a country house, whilst adding what seems to us all the luxuries one can think of – Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, gym bar, library, billiards room, etc, are all available to guests. To cap it all there is the extremely friendly service, which is very much a part of the Estalagem Jardins do Lago way of doings things. Odds are that you will want to come back.
