| Set in the heart of the impressive Jerte valley, a fine sight particularly in the springtime when the cherry trees start to blossom, the Finca el Carpinteiro is a magnificent example of how to restore and upgrade an old country house. On arriving one comes up to a stonewall building which, though attractive in itself, gives off the feel of simple rural ambience. As soon as you enter, though, the atmosphere is definitely one of luxury. Materials used are of high quality and taste including the chestnut and high wood beam ceilings. Obviously the hospitable owners, Ana and Javier, have put a great deal of thought into the décor. The old granite rock, for example, has been impressively incorporated into the ample living room whilst decor, though not necessarily antique, fits in well with the setting. Ana herself has painted much of the furniture, further giving the house an original and homely feel to it. As for the bedrooms, these are all located on the upper floor and have windows that overlook the pleasant countryside. Some come with canopies, black slate floors and high-beamed ceilings. All are extremely comfortable and well decorated. Do try and eat in the impressive dining room. Breakfast, in particular is first class. As for activities, the area is ideal for trekking, horse riding and biking. Or simply make the most of the local nature reserve “Garganta de los Infiernos”. |

The Dolmen Routes. Caceres: Caceres, a city of Estremadura, lies on a hill and is characterised by its constant evolution in history from Roman times until the present day. Two periods in it development have left their mark on today's city: the Arab stronghold before it fell to the Christians in 1229, and the feudal city between the 14th and 16th C, when it was swamped with palaces and towers of aristocratic families. This urban complex full of its own personality became part of World Heritage in 1986. Palace of Los Golfines de Arriba or Las Cigueñas Palace. During the 15th and 16th C, the palaces were replaced by magnificent stone houses which differed from the palaces only in size and fewer defensive means. This is the case of Aldana House, El Sol, Ulloa and Carvajal House... In their company, churches and convents were built, such as the Gothic Church of Santa Maria, which has cathedral status, the one of Santiago, which has an important reredos by Berruguete, the one of San Mateo, which was built in the 14th C on the site of a mosque, the Gothic Convent of San Francisco.
Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe. Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida Salamanca: Salamanca is probably best known for having the oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe. This university is still what gives ambiance to the town. You can see hundreds of students passing through the streets and enjoying numerous and beautifully decorated bars. This charming town is untouched in it's architectural purity. In central areas all recent buildings are constructed in Salamanca's best tradition. The city has been declared \"City of Mankind's Heritage\" by UNESCO. Depending on where you come from, there are two ways to reach El Carpintero. From Salamanca (north): [or Caceres (south)], take the N-630 in direction of Caceres [or Salamanca]. In Plasencia turn left [or right] onto the N-110 in direction of Navaconcejo / Barco de Ávila. Follow the road about 42 km until Tornevacas (this is the next village after you have passed Jerte). The Finca El Carpintero is on your left hand side a few hundred meters before the entrance to Tornevacas. This beautiful little country lodging inconspicuous from outside and easy to miss. From Valladolid (north): you can also take the road to Ávila and then follow the N-110 to Barcos de Ávila and continue until you reach Tornevacas. The Finca is on your right hand side, just after you leave Tornevacas.
