This place is simply great and proof positive that not all of the Algarve coast has sold its soul to the mass tourism devil. Lost somewhere between the fine sands, blue sea and sky, right in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve, the Forte São João da Barra goes back to the 17th century when it was built to defend the port of Tavira from attack.
That era is now long gone, but even now, its imposing stone walls act as a line of defence to more modern aggressors - high speed living and agitation. It’s pure peace here and the austere yet sophisticated decoration with period pieces and numerous contemporary paintings and sculptures, just add to the feeling of tranquility. Much of its beautiful past also remains, such as the square of arms, well and stone water tank.
Nothing also beats taking breakfast watching the birds, sea and as the incoming tide turns the river into a huge lake. Simply great as we said at the start and well worth a stay. To cap it all, the São João da Barra even has a small boat that takes guests up to the deserted beaches and river. Bicycles and numerous treks are also available. How about that for a peaceful Algarve holiday?
In conclusion, this is simply one of our favourite places in southern Portugal. The only possible downside is that rooms do not have views or terrace, a legacy of its original incarnation as a defensive fort. Yet this, in our opinion, is not a problem as we wager you will be spending as much of your time as possible taking in the charm of the public areas and main terrace of the fort. And with only a few rooms for such a large building, space is something that is definitely not at a premium so you can wander at your own leisure. |

Once on the main Algarve road E.N. 125 pass TAVIRA in direction of VILA RELA de STO ANTÓNIO and exit at CONCEIÇÃO DE TAVIRA in direction of CABANAS (roundabout with the statue of a golf player).
Cross the railway line, turn left by the sign indication MONTE VELHO and PRAIA and carry on straight ahead. Turn off when you seen the sign in direction of “BARROCA”.
Carry on in front until you come to a gate of a manor and keep a look out for the first electricity pylon on the right (some 20 metres after the gate). Turn right at this pylon and carry on for some 50 metres until you get to the door of the fort of the Forte de São João.

"The "Forte de S. Joao da Barra" is a superb B&B. Perhaps the best place we have ever had for holidays. Fantastic location for a wonderful conserved historical building. You get a sophisticated but very warm well-coming feeling.
The pool is great and the bikes are a nice plus (for example for a ride close to the Ria).
Just make sure you arrive with day light because this almost secret place is hard to find (in the middle of the all fields and nature).
