| There are few better places to get away from it all than the south west coast of Portugal, blessed as it is by unique isolated landscapes and wonderful beaches. It is precisely in this combined setting of countryside and sea that the 365-hectare Herdade do Touril can be found. Just getting there inspires tranquillity, as there is nothing else around to distract the visitor from the area’s charms. The sea breeze, warm earthy colours and smell of lavender and rosemary thus become all the more palpable. The Herdade do Touril, with its whitewashed walls tinged with blue, tiled roofs and ceramic floors retains all this rustic ambience of the Alentejo, without forsaking any comforts. Though a number of the furniture and fittings are reproduction, the feel is still one of authenticity, as the Touril also remains a working estate where around 150 cattle are bred. In fact, some of the quirkier touches include the numerous model animals located throughout - sheep, chickens, pigs made from a variety of materials, including wood and tin. Without doubt, these are sure to delight the little ones. Care has also been taken to maintain the intimacy of guests. Rooms, which are simple but tastefully decorated with comfortable beds lead out onto private terraces where one can contemplate the magic of the Alentejo. For those who like to combine peace with activity, leisure pursuits nearby include rambling, horse riding, fishing and diving. Zambujeira do Mar, an interesting little seaside town, is also within easy reach. |

Odemira Opening its way through hills and valleys to the ocean, the river Mira describes at a certain point a singular deviation. This was the place chosen, thousands of years ago, by Roman and Arabic people to settle down. The river gave Odemira it's name and it's importance along the centuries. The official charter was conceeded in 1256 by the king D. Afonso III to Odemira, which consequently has contributed for the community's development. The village has expanded along the mountain slopes with its beautiful white houses ornamented with colourful flowers.
Vila Nova de Mil Fontes In the the open Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, Vila Nova de Milfontes is one of the places in great demand during holidays. The beaches are its main attraction, although lately the clear waters of river Mira and its beautiful estuary became another place looked after.
Santa Clara-a-Velha Is a small rural village where it is still possible to encounter the authentic Alentejo. The popular architecture of whitewashed houses crossed by an intense blue, typical of this region, and the small Church in the main square deserve an attentive look.
Zambujeira do Mar Still remains as one of the last paradises on Alentejo's southwest coast. Its beaches constitute one of its most important attractions, but there is a lot to discover along the coastline, part of the protected area of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. On the top of the cliff, the small village, witness since ancient times of the population's fishing activities, is the perfect natural terrace to stare at an amazing ocean's view.
