The Hostal La Hormiga Voladora (also Baelo) is one of those lovely, unassuming places that seem increasingly hard to find in this day and age, so imagine our delight when we came across it in our travels. It is a beautifully situated and quirky seaside accommodation that fits in perfectly with the relaxed and typically Andalusian environment. Donkeys as well as horses freely trot around the local village and happily intermingle with the inhabitants, which makes an interesting change from the usual cats and dogs.

Inside the Hormiga, the visitor will find the rooms to be no frills and simple, yet all are comfortable and furnished to good standards. The bathrooms in particular are modern and tastefully decorated with seashell motifs; though it should be noted the apartments are somewhat plainer.

Nevertheless, leave the gates of the Hostal La Hormiga Voladora and after a few steps you reach the superb, hardly touched, beach with its beautiful bay, white sands, dunes and clear waters – in our opinion, heaven by the sea!

This get away, end of the world feel does not mean seclusion: the picturesque local village (it comes beautifully into view as you approach on the winding mountain road) offers many facilities, shops and restaurants which more than compensates the lack of services within the premises. There are also interesting Roman ruins nearby to admire and the visitor will never be at a loss for things to do.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Vejer: Go in direction of Tarifa on the N-340 road and turn right where it says Bolona. Follow the road all the way down to the beach. When you arrive at the village of Bolona, turn left (do not continue straight ahead towards the Roman ruins) and follow the road along the beach. After some 500 metres, you will cross a small bridge after which you will come to the Hostal Baelo on the right hand side.

“Hostal Hormiga Voladora is a great place to stay!
There is a great, fine-sandy beach 50-100 metres walking distance. The Beach is definitely not overcrowded!!! The apartments are very simple, but comfortable and clean.

The two room apartment is perfect for families with two little children, able to sleep in the parent’s bed-room. You will enjoy seeing the cows and horses in the street, while you are walking to the bakery in the morning. The village has got 2 little supermarkets, one bakery and about 4 to 6 restaurants/bars. It is a quiet and peaceful place.

"Hostal la Hormiga Voladora is fabulous. With a typical andalusian arquitecture and beautiful patios and garden, the hostal is a great value for money. Rooms are simple but pretty and confortable. We could hear the see waves from inside the room and had a beautiful view of the beach, which almost all rooms have. We stayed in a double room with high wooden ceilings in the old part of the building. The staff is welcoming and polite. We will surely stay there again."
