This turn of the century hotel gets top marks for its wonderful location - just yards from the Mundaka sea front – and the superb views it affords of the coast. But it should also be praised for its charming hosts, hospitality and fine food. Carmen and José Ignacio have managed to establish a cosy atmosphere that complements the pretty white building and its galleried façade. Atalaya comes with all modern comforts, yet remains unpretentious and cosy, though some glitches include the artificial flowers and tapestries. Rooms, though not necessarily on the large side, are comfortable to the last. Mundaka itself doubles as a pretty little port town and international surfing Mecca. People come here to surf its “Ezqueirda” waves (devotees of the sport will know what that means), which is apparently the longest in Europe. Do try the breakfast on the terrace garden and restaurant serving some fine seafood then enjoy the breezes and tranquillity that only the sea seems to bring. In short, simple and a good base to explore Mundaka and the beautiful surroundings.

Bilbao
Bilbao is the heart of a metropolian area with over 1.000.000 inhabitants. It was founded 700 years ago and since then it has been the central point for socio-economic development of the region. No other city has so many reasons to be the economic, financial, cultural and touristic centre of the whole area. Its architecture is interesting with the modernist buildings of the undeniable rich urbanistic ensemble of the Ensanche and the historic and monumental area of the Casco Viejo. It is also a coastal city with excellent sandy beaches just a few kilometres away. Its cuisine alone is proverbial. To its existing stock of museums, galleries and theatres, the addition of the Guggenheim Museum-Bilbao. Bilbao is a city with a lifestyle that makes it a welcoming place for the visitor.

The \"Ensanche\" and the modern city: This Expansion area of the 20th century, overlooking the River with excellent examples of modernist and bourgeois architecture.

San Sebastián
Situated in the centre of the Basque Country, is the capital of the province of Gipuzkoa with three beaches opening out onto the sea. The city is superbly locatedat the mouth of the Río Uremea and around the beautiful Bahía de la Concha. There are splendid views from both hills, but the best is from the top of Monte Igueldo to which there is a funicular railway. At the foot of the other wooded mound, Monte Urgull, are the harbour and crowded older part –centre of evening activity whith buzzes in the narrow streets, bars and eating places. San Sebastián is the home of 180.000 residents. It is a cosmopolitan city with a long history of tourism and irradiates a special tranquility that turnes it into a particulary relaxing place for visitors. It enjoys a temperate climate with mild winters and pleasant summers. Average temperature is 22ºC.

Trips around Guipuzkoa: The tour goes along the coastal road to Getaria and its lovely fishing port. A little further in Zumaia you can visit the Ignacio de Zuloaga painter´s museum and afterwards in Azpeitia the Basilica and the house where Saint Ignatius Loyola was born. Return to San Sebastián through the Valley of Regil.

Excursion along the Bidasoa coast: The tour goes to Pasajes de San Juan, where you find Guipuzkoa´s loading port. Later on the tour, in the fishing town, Hondarribia, you can walk in the old town and try fresh fish in the \"Marina\" neighbourhood. Return along the coastal road and have spectacular views of the valley from Mount Jaizkibel.

Excursion to the interior area: On a trip to the interior around Goierri you come to see the the green country side, the mountainous peaks of the Aizkorri (1,550 m) and the Aralar mountain ranges. In Goierri you can see the Beasain´s 15th century palace and a visit to the small villages Segura and Zerain, with its Ethnographical Museum about Basque lifestile, also are a must on this tour.

Bilbao:
The 21th century city: City of internacional design with Metro, new bridges, Guggenheim Museum, Euskalduna Palace and a new urban centre in Abandoibarra.

A walk around the Old Quarter: Mediaeval Bilbao, including the Gothic cathedral of Santiago, several Gothic and Renaissance churches, the Arriaga Theatre and the Arenal Park.

San Sebastián
The best historical treasure in the city is the Museo de San Telmo, formerly a 16C convent.

From Bilbao take A8 / E-70 motorway, leaving at Exit 18. Then BI-635 via Gernika to Mundaka; left into the village centre. Hotel near Santa María church, just above the fishermen’s port.
