Lisbon finally has a top notch hotel in the cosmopolitan and trendy theatre district of Bairro Alto, from whence the hotel gets its name. It really is fresh from the press, having opened its doors to the public in 2005, and it is already becoming renowned as one of the best addresses in town, but then the Bairro Alto was done up by Grace Leo Andrieu - also famous for the Lancaster in Paris, for example. The design of the 55 rooms and suites have a contemporary approach of classic Portuguese style with the latest hi-tech features (wi-fi Internet access, etc). Facilities include a street access restaurant with esplanade, a Trendy bar, a mezzanine lounge, a private boardroom, a panoramic terrace overlooking the Tagus River for special events and fitness center with massage. An underground car park, the famous 28 tram (provides a scenic and romantic way of getting to know Lisbon) plus the metro facing the hotel door, means guests are also very well served transport wise.

You should plan at least a couple of days to explore the rich variety of Lisbon’s quarters (bairros) and attractions.

Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon, going from the walls of the castle São Jorge down to the Tejo. High above the city centre to the west of the Baixa is the so called Bairro Alto. This is the natural place to wind up at night. Well worth a morning or afternoon stroll to explore.

The Baixa is Europe's first example of Neoclassical design and urban planning. The lower town is very much the heart of the city and main shopping area.

Many of Lisbon's touristic attractions are located in Belém, amongst them are the Jerónimos Monastery, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Torre de Belém, the Belém Cultural Centre and Rua Vieira Portuense. The Belém Cultural Centre (CCB) is known as one of the great cultural centres in Europe, and a building of outstanding architecture: exhibitions, performing arts, restaurants, gardens and shops.

The Parque das Nações, the former EXPO area, is still worth a visit.

Also don't miss the famous Flea Market, Feira da Ladra, which fills the Campo de Santa Clara, at the eastern edge of Alfama on Tuesdays and Saturdays (7am-6pm).

Outside Lisbon there is a lot more to see:
Sintra, a world heritage site, has all the charm of a fairy tale town and was once described by Lord Byron as "the glorious Eden". Sintra has beautiful palaces old residences to visit, particularly the Palácio da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Convento dos Capuchos, Palácio da Vila and luxuriant gardens of Monserrate.

Costa da Caparica is a thoroughly Portuguese resort with restaurants and summer bars. It is a perfect place to swim or laze around on the sand. Located south of Lisbon, getting there is by way of crossing the Tagus Bridge or a ferry boat and bus.

Estoril and Cascais can be reached within 20 min. from Lisbon. Estoril was once known as the "Portuguese Rivieira" with grandiose villas and luxury hotels whereas Cascais was an old fishing village with pretty houses by the sea, is now a major resort. Both villages are connected by a beautiful promenade along the coast.

Serra da Arrábida, between Setúbal and Sesimbra is a peaceful nature reserve with its own microclimate that has created unique tree species. There are numerous animals, as well as excellent beaches to enjoy. On the way you can stop at Azeitão, a town renowned for its wines and cheese.

Praia do Guincho is a beautiful beach and a superb spot for surfing and windsurfing. Located just outside Cascais, a car is required to get there.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Lisbon Airport: Follow the signs heading for the centre of town. You will arrive at the first roundabout, once there, go straight ahead and follow the Av. Gago Coutinho until the signs for Av EEUU/Entrecampos on your right hand side. Follow the Av EEUU until you arrive at the Entrecampos roundabout, once there, make a left and you will enter the Av. Da República. Follow this Avenue until you arrive at a first roundabout, go straight ahead until a second roundabout, which is the Marques do Pombal, on this roundabout take the 3rd exit slightly to your right and stay in the Avenue da Liberdade until you arrive at Praça do Comercio (a large square by the water) having passed the Rossi Square. Once at Praça do Comercio, turn right going along the water front until you reach Cais do Sodre Square (this is where the train station to Cascais is located). At the roundabout here, turn right and go up the Rua do Alecrim. The Hotel Bairro Alto is located at Luis de Camões Square on the left.
