If designer chic or cutting edge minimalism turn you cold and prefer the warmth and comfort of something slightly more classic, the 16th century Hotel Casa Verardo could be just for you. There are two great advantages to this hotel; its position just behind St. Mark’s Square (200metres behind) and its position on the edge of one of the more residential, authentic quarters. If that sounds contradictory, it’s not. Venice does get crowded and the area north of St. Mark’s towards the Rialto or west to the Accademia are indeed packed with people. However, just like the wind, if you step even a little bit out of the breeze you can find a wonderful sheltered oasis and that’s exactly what the Casa Verardo is.

Over 400 years of history packed into a Venetian aristocratic family palazzo, the hotel features a wonderful courtyard, a kind of summer living room where the staff put out comfy sofas and chairs, a lovely way to relax when you need to take the weight off your feet, relax and read a book or try a glass of the local Tocai. Aside from the courtyard the hotel has a further two terraces, one of which is set up for breakfast when the weather is fine, allowing you to take the first cappuccino in true style and make the most of that wonderful Venetian light.

Back on the inside, the rooms are both classical and a little flamboyant. Of course this is Venice so don’t expect huge great chambers; comfort and a simple elegance are the key here. But what to do when you’re not in the rooms? That perhaps is the great beauty of the Casa Verardo, it’s position is hard to beat right in the centre of Venice yet tucked into its own little hideaway.

You’ve got the perfect location to make an early start and beat the queues for St. Mark’s or the Doge’s Palace but if you fancy a lazy day, head for the beach at the Lido or take a trip to Murano or Burano. The vaporetto stop of San Zaccaria is less then two minutes away and handily, the most useful vaporetti stop here so getting to the airport, railway station or simply hopping on and off the boats to get around town couldn’t really be much easier.

Likewise if you are the kind of person who just likes wandering aimlessly (actually the best way to explore Venice since you come across the best hidden gems this way) then the location is perfect. Step out of the hotel and drift away from the direction of St. Mark’s, coming across a church by Palladio here, a morning market there, the Fondamenta Nuove with views across the lagoon to San Michele and Murano.

ll	Tips & Getting There

The chances are you’ll be arriving at the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop by either the number 82, 1 or the Alilaguna boat from the airport. From here it is just a short walk to the hotel (5 minutes at the most). Take Calle delle Rasse which leads away from the dock, arriving in the piazza Campo San Filippo e Giacomo. You should see the Pharmacy on the corner, follow Calle della Sagrestia and bear right, you should find the hotel just over the bridge, Ponte Storto.
