When we saw this country Asturias hotel it reminded us a little of Scotland, or how Scotland used to be. Views of mountains, rivers brimming with trout and salmon, unspoilt forests, wild boar, deer and partridge in the foothills of the Picos de Europa mountains. All of this nature can be indulged in to greater or lesser extents according to your ideas of what relaxation means. Everybody though can try the local food which is famous for its freshness and great care over sourcing. Beaches are also close by (30 minutes in the car) and a whole host of villages and towns that don’t feature in the normal tourist trails, preserving their identities and traditional ways.

The hotel itself dates from the early 1900s, built as part of the country estate of an Asturian emigré who, returned from Mexico, wanted to show off a little of his new found wealth. Now restored and with its 10 rooms each decorated individually the hotel is a great place to come to relax. The rooms are located on three floors, with the two bedrooms in the loft including the original wooden beams. Downstairs there is a large, comfy living room with a vast library offering a great selection of literature. A gallery leads off from here with extra large windows making the most of the views across to the Ques Mountains.

In short the Casona de Bustiello provides a wonderfully comfortable base to explore this fascinating corner of Spain where the Picos de Europa, Redes Natural Park, the Asturian coastline and the towns of Ribadesella, Oviedo, Gijon, Tazones and Colunga are all within a 30 minute drive.

The hotel have their own horses and offer lessons for those who would like to improve or even begin their new hobby. Flyfishing the trout and salmon streams, kayaking in the gorges, excellent opportunities for hiking, if you do want to get out and about then there’s plenty to do.

From a cultural point of view, the Asturias is one of the more atypical Spanish regions. Being mountainous the people have preserved their traditional lifestyles a little better than elsewhere and are fiercely proud of their local dialects and customs. Food, wine and cider are important here and the many rivers and streams criss-crossing the region as well as its proximity to the Atlantic, means that excellent fish is also available.

In the summer time the beaches are some of the least crowded in Spain though beginning to attract more people from the other side of the Iberian peninsula who have heard about the Asturian “difference”. If you are lucky enough to coincide with the local fiesta of the "Exaltación de la Santa Cruz" in September then you can get an excellent impression of a how a traditional village celebrates its one big party time of the year.

ll	Tips & Getting There

Santander and Bilbao are both well-served by the low-cost carriers as well as British Airways and Iberia. From the UK ferries depart for both cities.

The Hotel Casona de Bustiello is approximately 20 miles (35km) east of Gijon, along the quiet country road, AS-255 that joins Villaviciosa to Infiesta, being a little closer to the latter than Villaviciosa.
