A refined and luxurious country house in the Alentejo

The story of the Estalagem São Domingos is invariably linked to the mining of pyrite and copper. Up to the 1960’s this area used to boast the largest copper mines in the whole of Iberia, and it was from the São Domingos manor house that the mines were administered - After the closure of the mines in 1967, the whole place fell into disrepair, but thankfully after a major renovation to the house, this area can now boast its own five star luxury country hotel. It is the first house you see as you leave picturesque Mertola and the São Domingos is eye catching indeed, blending as it does an Alentejo flavour with a certain English Victorian style, partly explained by its British connections at the time of the mines. Set within over 3000 acres of grounds, the São Domingos has been refurbished in such a way as to keep as many of original artefacts of the house as possible and the result is a design based both contemporary and historical lines. This is particularly true of the main house with the six bedrooms beautifully done and decorated in a refined manner. The newer block holding a further 25 rooms does not have the benefits of history or are, in our opinion, as sophisticated, but they remain comfortable nevertheless. Not many countryside hotels can also boast their own observatory (especially one equipped with GPS and computer controlled 14'' Meade telescope), but the night sky here is pretty exceptional so astronomers will find the São Domingos a truly exceptional accommodation. The São Domingos in house restaurant is a further plus point. Beautifully designed and offering a number of wonderful regional specialities. We are always pleased to find places that have been reinvented as the Estalagem São Domingos is a prime example of this.

Mountain bikes and jeeps are available to guests for excursions.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Lisbon airport:
Drive past the Tagus Bridge and head on the A2 motorway for the ALGARVE (if heading from Vasco da Gama Bridge, then take the A12 motorway and then exit onto the A2 motorway) until you reach the BEJA exit. Exit here and drive via Beja on the IP8 and MÉRTOLA (N122) to MINA DE SÃO DOMINGOS (N265). This lovely drive through the broad expanse of the Alentejo – dotted with cork oaks, olive groves and cornfields – takes about three hours.

From Faro airport, it takes 1 1/2 hours on the fast IP1 road right up to almost the Spanish frontier, taking the CASTRO MARIM/MÉRTOLA exit onto the IC27/N122 via MÉRTOLA to MINA DE SÃO DOMINGOS (N265)

The Estalagem de São Domingos can also fetch guests at Faro airport if staying 7 nights or longer, though as there is no car rental in Mértola, a car is verty much advised.
