Cosiness, Italian style, in the land of Romeo and Juliet

Verona is known the world over as the cradle of the greatest love story ever told – Romeo and Juliet. But it is also a living medieval museum in itself with so much to see and do. There is probably no better place from which to enjoy all this history and culture than the Hotel Gabbia D’Oro, especially if you are a romantic at heart. Small, cosy, wonderfully decorated and located, this converted 18th century palazzo joins onto the Garedello Tower (1320) and is simply packed with antiques, original frescoes and oriental carpets. Then there are the beamed ceilings, stone stairs and a plethora of other old world accessories - not to mention 16th century golf framed prints on the walls - to make you feel that a Shakespearean character perhaps once stayed here too. Given the building’s age, rooms may be on the small side, but this does not detract anything from the Gabbia D’Oro’s immense charm and style both in the public and private areas. Romantic is the operative word here, with some rooms affording round tubs, marble ornaments and mosaics. Beautiful, however, is a word you can use to describe them all. Whilst there is no in-house restaurant, the hotel’s perfect central location means eating houses, shopping and other activities are all within easy walking distance. Just step outside and you can also take your pick of the medieval and renaissance monuments at your disposal (not to mention Gothic and Roman). Even so, we certainly suggest taking time to imbibe the special ambience of the Gabbia D’Oro; for example, an afternoon tea at the L’Orangerie patio and perhaps indulge in your Shakespearean fantasies.
