Hotel Relais Palazzo del Capitano
San Quirico D'Orcia - Siena - Tuscany
Village
Number of rooms: 22

A World Heritage site since 2004, the Val d’Orcia is one of the most unspoilt areas of Tuscany. A beautiful area that fits perfectly with an imagination of Tuscan landscapes, those steep, conical hills with towns perched on top, vineyards and olives and the dark green of cypresses contrasting with the yellows of the fields and, hidden amongst it all, the town of San Quirico.

This well-kept secret conceals another little gem, the Hotel Relais Palazzo del Capitano, a lovely hotel with 16 rooms and plenty of personality. Simple but done with a great deal of care to protect the 600 year old building, the rooms have been given a very sensitive restoration and the hotel provides a wonderful place to come and stay in this quiet corner of Tuscany. Wooden beams, open fires, brick floors and four poster beds are features found in many of the rooms and while being extremely comfortable, the hotel is at the same time very honest and relaxed.

Having established quite a reputation for their restaurant, the Al Vecchio Forno (also in the village) Roberto and Cosetta have built on their experience with the Palazzo del Capitano, adding just the necessary touches to the beauty of the place to succeed in creating something really quite wonderful. The private gardens are an ideal spot to have breakfast in the summer with lavender and herb beds, vines and olive trees providing a perfect backdrop to a relaxed break. In the cooler seasons you can take breakfast indoors in front of the roaring fire.

The hotel is absolutely charming but please bear in mind that its historical status and preservation of period details, walls and floors mean that it has no elevator and as such it would not be suitable for anyone with difficulties in mobility.

This is one of our favourite hotels in Tuscany for its combination of great location, authentic environment and very reasonable prices. A real delight!

ll Activities
Being located almost halfway between Montepulciano and Montalcino there are more than enough excuses here to try a glass or two of the Nobile or Brunello, some of Italy’s finest wines. Plenty of the Cantine in the vicinity open their doors for tasting, often offering some of the local cheeses as a suitable accompaniment.

Walking and horse-riding are both easy to organize, with a network of trails and paths criss-crossing this part of Tuscany. Siena is less than an hour away by car and Florence too, easy to reach with the fast road that leads on from Siena. Pienza, the ultimate in “new towns” with an almost uniquely homogenous fascination with renaissance architecture is well worth a visit, just remember to try some of the local Pecorino or sheep’s cheese, normally well seasoned and a perfect partner to a glass of Brunello or Nobile di Montepulciano.

ll Tips & Getting There
Driving from the North:
Leave the A1 highway at the FIRENZE-CERTOSA exit and follow the Siena-Florence dual carriageway all the way to the exit at SIENA SUD. From here take the SS2 Cassia following indications for Monteroni d’Arbia – Buonconvento until you arrive at San Quirico d’Orcia.

Driving from the South (Rome):
Take the CHIUSI-CHIANCIANO TERME exit from the A1 highway and follow signs for Chianciano Terme – Siena. After 5km you will arrive at a junction where you need to slow down a little and pay attention! Turn left and immediately right in order to follow the sings for Bagno Vignoni, Cassia and San Quirico d’Orcia. This is a minor road but extremely beautiful as it passes through the scenery of southern Tuscany. Ignore the many crossroads and continue in the direction marked San Quirico, Siena.
