With a vista that pans out over the Marqués valley and River Tagus, few hotels can surely afford the spectacular views provided by Las Nubes. It is a truly impressive sight and one that has been rated as perhaps the best in Spain: who are we to disagree? The hosts, Maria and Carlos, have taken full advantage of the hotel’s privileged hilltop location in the way they have decorated and laid out what is essentially a modern hotel. The uncluttered furnishings and interior design, with its neutral colours and simple lines further give the hotel further luminosity and sense of peace, and let nothing get in the way of those views. The living room, for example, with its centrepiece copper chimney, is encompassed by glass walls that lets one look out into what seems like infinity. From here it seems one can almost touch the clouds (las Nubes in Spanish, though the name of the hotel actually comes from the fresco of clouds on the lounge wall). Watching the sunset from here is a glorious experience and one not to be missed. A great place for seclusion (getting there is by an isolated dirt track - great for those with an adventurous spirit) tranquillity and great views.

The Romanesque route
Start off from medieval Sigüenza, with its singular buildings such as the Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace. On the way to Atienza along the C-114, turn off to the fortified Palazuelos or to Carabias to savour a good example of rural Romanesque, or to Riba de Santiuste with its castle. Once historic Atienza has been visited continue through mountainous countryside full of pine trees and with scattered villages, some with lovely Romanesque churches, such as Albendiego, Campisábalos and Villacadima. From Galve de Sorbe you can return to Atienza or cross the sierra de Alto Rey through Aldeanueva de Atienza as far as the beauty spots in the Congosto pass, between San Andrés del Congosto and Alcorlo, or those of the region of the Palmaces reservoir. Finally you will return to Jadraque and its proud castle, before finishing up in Sigüenza.

Henares and Alto Jarama
Leaving Guadalajara along the N-II towards Torija, travel along country roads as far as the medieval Hita and Cogolludo, a charming 15th century village which boasts the Palace of the Duques de Medinaceli, one of the earliest Renaissance buildings in Spain. Later you gradually move further into the sierra, the historic capital of which is Tamajón. The road, which skirts the western slope of the Ocejón peak (2,048 metres) is full of surprises, offering unknown scenery and villages such as Almiruete, Campillo de Ranas and Majaelrayo. On the other side of the Ocejón and showing its scenery is Valverde de los Arroyos, where there is a 120 metre waterfall, the Chorrera de Valverde. Skirting the Vado marsh, where the Jarama channel begins, you head for Retiendas and drop down to Puebla de Beleña, and from there you come to Uceda and Cubillo de Uceda, on the way back to the capital.

La Alcarria
Taking Sigüenza as a starting point, go on the N-II road in Torresaviñán, but just before Almadrones bear left and head for Brihuega. From there travel along the C-201 to Masegoso de Tajuña and Cifuentes. Even if it means extending the journey, it would be worthwhile continuing through Trillo (about 10 kilometres to the south) and, among picturesque scenery such as the Rambla passes, in Arbeteta, and the Tormellera, in Ocentejo, return north as far as Riba de Saelices and Santa María del Espino to admire the cave paintings of the caves of los Casares and de la Hoz, which are both national places of interest. In Alcolea del Pinar you begin your return, not before first admiring a beautiful and unusual church in Sauca.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Barcelona:Take the E90 heading for Zaragoza/Madrid. Once there take the highway to Valencia and follow the instructions below.From Madrid:Take the highway leading to Valencia (N III/E901); and make the exit to Tielmes (approx. 41 kms) and then follow these signs:Carabaña, Orusco, Andite, Mondejar, Almoguera, Zorita de los Canes and finally Albalate de Zorita; once in Albalate, make the second turn on your right following the signs to “Las Nubes” and “Ermita de Cabanillas” and you will be arriving at the Hotel.
