Some events stay fixed in the mind long after you’ve experienced them and for us, a visit to the charming guesthouse, Jardins Secrets in Nîmes was a little like that. Four wonderful suites (a few more are on the way) laden with paintings, flowers and objects bought back from various travels adds more than a touch of the exotic and eclectic. This is all done with a very careful eye over the whole effect, however, never too much; someone with considerable talent has cared for and watched this beautiful house grow.
The gardens provide another excuse to come and visit, as the name Jardins Secrets suggests, this veritable oasis tucked discretely behind a wall in what, from the outside, seems to be a fairly normal looking street. Once you are inside, though, things are very different, palms, olives, lots of bougainvillea, oranges, lemons and even banana trees provide an unusual but wonderful setting for breakfast in the spring or summer. The gardens also provide a haven when the weather heats up and, after a morning of exploring ancient Roman Nîmes, you can come and practise that great Mediterranean art, the siesta, take a dip in the swimming pool or simply relax by the rose bushes, read a book and breathe in the scents of the garden.
The rooms are large and continue the theme found in the sitting room; lots of beautiful objects and lots of love and care in a chic and stylish environment. There’s a real emphasis on fabrics with quality linen and four poster beds in many of the rooms to create an air of sumptuous luxury. When you come away to relax you want to make sure you do it in the right surroundings and the absolutely charming Jardins Secrets does that to a treat. Be generous with yourself and indulge.
All of this would be unique enough if it weren’t for Mme. Annabelle and her husband to top it all off. With their legendary chocolate cake, tons of warmth and a real understanding for what we, as people, not just clients, want, Jardins Secrets is a haven, a vision of a more sensual and more relaxing world.
Please note that a minimum stay of 2 Nights applies in June – September. Jardins Secrets currently has 4 rooms with further 10 becoming available after the 1st June 2007. |

Nîmes has some top class Roman sites, almost on a par with the capital of the Empire itself. The Maison Carrée, they say, is second only to the Pantheon in terms of its “intactness”. Of course these things can always be argued over but it is indeed incredibly well preserved, a small but perfect reminder of another world. It was Augustus who made Nîmes great and the city was also left with an amphitheatre and tower, the Tour Magne, on a hill just 15 minutes’ walk from the city centre, through a beautiful park.
Ancient history aside, the city retains the feel of a provincial town even if its influences include Mediterranean, Occitan and some slight Iberian influences. There is a great variety of dishes with seafood and southern-style cooking all featuring on the menus of the restaurants in the old part of town.
Jardins Secrets is a 5 minute walk from the Arènes or amphitheatre so for strolling or shopping everything is close at hand.

Though there are low cost flights available to Nîmes, the city is far from losing its authenticity, its does quite well economically and so has always been a real, lived-in city and quite popular with the French who admire its cuisine, closeness to the coast and distinct culture.
Whether you are arriving in Nîmes from the A9/E15 (Use either exit 24 or 25 depending on arrival from the east or west) or from Arles on the A54/E80 your main aim is to get onto the N113 which leads into the heart of the city centre where it becomes Avenue de Général Leclerc. Cross straight over Boulevard Talaboud into Avenue Carnot and then the first street on the right hand side, Rue Gaston Maruéjols and you’ve arrived!
If you have any doubts whilst navigating, follow directions for the train station which is in the same quartier as Jardins Secrets and work your way backwards from there.
