Jerónimos 8
Lisbon - Lisbon - Lisbon Hotels & Sintra
City Break

Lisbon needed and deserved a hotel like this, the recently opened Jerónimos 8 – Lisbon’s first true design hotel. Brand new, chic and vanguard, it is also faultless in terms of location, being situated in the heart of one of Lisbon’s most beautiful districts, Belém, and next to the gothic masterpiece that is the Jeronimos Monastery, built in the 16th century as a testament to Portugal’s then power and wealth.

The elegant façade of the Jeronimos 8, of course, fits in with general ambience of the area, but the contrast with the inside could not be more striking. It is ultra sleek, bold in the use of colour (sensual red is a recurring one) and has a totally retro feel in terms of furnishings. Each room was also individually designed, but all of the come with sumptuous marble bathrooms and plenty of natural light, with large windows to make the most of the beautiful views of the surrounding area.

Indeed, we’ve already mentioned the interesting location, so we may as well add that the Jerónimos 8 is also only a few hundred metres away from Belem Cultural Centre, which is not only a major monument in its own right, but also holds the fabulous Berardo collection of Modern Art, one of the best of its kind in the whole of Europe, if not the world. Expect to see works of artists such as Picasso, Mondrian, Henry Moore, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, amongst many others.

Although Lisbon is often thought of as a city for sun and beach lovers, it is thanks to newly emerging collections such as the Berardo that it is rapidly gaining a reputation as major cultural centre. And given the Jeronimo 8’s attention to style and modern elegance, it is fitting that it is so close by to such a great collection. The two seem to go hand in hand in terms of combining the best of history with the contemporary.

ll Activities
The Jeronimo 8’s greart location means there is much to do, as soon as you leave its doors.

Landmarks within immediate walking distance include Belem Cultural Centre, which holds the Berardo Collection (see above), the 16th Century Jeronimos Monastery (a must see), Belem Tower (again a must see), the Monument to the Discoveries, which boasts great views from the top, the tropical Garden Museum, Naval and Coach Museums and even the Gulbenkian Planetarium. If you want to put on a bit of weight, then we heartily recommend a trip to the Belém “Pastel de Nata” bakery. It is impossible to have just one of their delicious custard tarts, the recipe of which remains a secret even to this day. (Allegedly, on 3 living persons at a time are thought to hold the recipe).
