Koala Tarifa offers us five apartments around an Andalusian patio – that can be reached by independent entries in the case of the three on the top floor. It’s actually what the Spaniards call a “patio de vecinos” – a communal yard that has been converted into an aparthotel with staircases where tenants would enter their houses. With names that are anagrams of Koala (Kalao, Lakoa, etc.), the apartments have a kitchen, bathroom with shower, TV, DVD and a beautiful terrace at the roof that can be used as a solarium. They are cleaned and the beds done, daily.

Tarifa has steadily become the European capital of wind and kitesurfing. The narrow, twisting streets of this fisherman’s village are crammed with shops, bar and restaurants full of life and vitality. In point of fact Marta, the owner of Koala, used to own one of these trendy shops until she and her partner Björn decided to try their hand at the world of hostelry – they will be the perfect guides to advise you where to eat, shop or swim. Without leaving town we may visit the castle of Guzmán El Bueno, where legend tells that he flung his dagger at the Saracens for them to slay his son rather than surrender the garrison.

From Sevilla: Take the A4 (later the E5) heading for Cádiz, pass Cádiz and keep on the E5 heading for Tarifa. Follow the signs.
