This cheery hotel in Arles is quite a jolly place, full of bright colours, quaint pieces of furniture, more than a bit of personality and an excellent price/quality ratio. It’s cute, rather than luxurious, and its position, adjacent to the amphitheatre and the ancient theatre in the heart of the traffic-free old quarter make it a top choice for strolling around or simply returning to your favourite café for an apéritif before dinner.

The building dates back to the 1600s and features lots of period details whilst the rooms themselves are up-to-date without being ruined by dubious “modernist interpretations”. The rooms vary in size and most have high wooden ceilings adding character and charm, each is different and full of personality – this is a three star hotel but Denis and Philippe have added lots of colour and warmth making it homely and welcoming. At over 300 years old the building is a bit of a historical landmark in itself, the lobby and lounge especially create a sense of old Provençal style with a great stone staircase (in place of an elevator!) leading up from the hall.

If the first thing you do when you arrive in your hotel room is rush to the bathroom to examine the complimentary shampoos, shower gels and lemon scented foot powder then this may not be the place for you. It’s honest, quaint and really rather cute so if it’s more important to be in the heart of the old quarter, be comfortable and surrounded by tons of personality then L’Hôtel de L’Amphithéâtre is definitely it.

ll Activities
To see Arles itself you wouldn’t need more than a day or two, the town is small and easily navigable on foot. It does provide a great base for exploring, however, being in the centre of a circle comprising Nîmes, the Pont du Gard, Avignon, the beautiful wilderness of the Camargue and many beaches too – all of which are 30 to 40 minutes from Arles itself.

To see Arles’ ancient quarter things really couldn’t be much easier; both the Amphitheatre and the Ancient Theatre are within 20 metres. Once you’ve done a little wondering round town you could always stop for a coffee in Place du Forum where van Gogh painted the now legendary night café or go for lunch and try the cuisine which in this corner of south-western Provence features a blend of both typically French and Occitan Mediterranean influences. One place to start in order to get a good idea of the local culture and produce is the Saturday morning market. Worth trying too is the antiques market held on the first Wednesday of each month.

ll Tips & Getting There
Ryanair use Nîmes airport, just twenty minutes away whilst Montpellier airport is a larger port of call for Easyjet and the major carriers.

Arles is easily reached by road, to arrive at the hotel itself follow directions for “Centre Ville”. Once you have arrived in the centre you should begin to see signs for the hotel itself though you can also follow signs for Théâtre Antique which is adjacent. Do note, however, that this is the heart of the old quarter so if driving through narrow winding medieval streets leaves you stressed, you may find it easier to park 5 minutes walk away on Boulevard des Lices where there is a public parking. We would recommend speaking to the hotel a few days before you arrive to confirm the latest information as regards parking – the hotel are often able to provide discounted parking in the area.
