Casa del Azahar is an 18th century palace with all the classical trimmings of Andalusia: an arched patio, a well with subterranean tank – and a magnificent, bicentennial orange tree that in Spring will delight us with the fragrance of its “azahar” blossoms, that give name to the place. It has three suites and four rooms – plus three sitting rooms and a glorious solarium in the roof. During the renovation of this noble mansion, original elements such as floors, beam ceilings, tilings, doors and windows were respected, leaving white, clean spaces full of southern light.

Although we are half an hour away from the beach – that’s why Medina-Sidonia is called the Bay’s Balcony (Cadiz’s) – the town itself is a delight for the visitor to explore. It was founded by Phoenicians originating from Sidon (Lebanon); Romans converted it in a “colony with Roman right”. Afterward it would fall into Muslim hands until reconquered by Alfonso X el Sabio in 1264. Finally, it became part of the Señorío de los Duques de Medina-Sidonia in 1440.

An ideal place for “tapas” (snacks, appetizers at bars) such as local fried fish and seasoned potatoes. Or to eat the traditional stews of cabbage, cardoon or artichokes, topping it with those marvellous sweets that Cádiz has inherited from the oriental confectionery: alfajores, pestiños, amarguillos and piñonates.

Besides the spectacular views that you can savour from Medina (city, in Arabian), with the whole bay and mountain range surrounding you, another attraction of the City of Sidón are the whitewashed streets with the wrought iron balconies and Andalusian patios, inherited from an ancient culture that still endures.

Medina Sidonia is located in the magnificent natural enclave of the "La Ruta de Toro" some 20 minutes from the best beaches of Cadiz and only 30 minutes from Jerez international airport. From Jerez de la Frontera, take the A-381 and pass San José del Pedroso until you come to Medina Sidonia.
