| The combination of a truly beautiful town, attention to detail and really welcoming hosts makes for a winning formula at the Casa del Rector. After two and a half years of restoration, the house was recently opened to the public and, it must be said, all the hard work put in has been worth it. The old world charm has been combined with a hint of the modern, where disparate elements such as iron, stone, wood and glass come together to good effect. The inner courtyard, for example, takes in stone pillars and columns, iron balustrades as well as a generous sprinkling of colour. Rooms, carry on this vein, with their iron beds and beamed ceilings being of particular note. It is obvious the hosts have put a great deal of thought into the smallest of details so that guests will enjoy being pampered with fine touches such as exclusive robes, slippers and even Jacuzzi and orthopaedic bed - whatever the room. Do try the nearby restaurant that also belongs to the owners. It is exquisite! Finally, a word of caution. As rooms lead out onto the courtyard corridor, it is perhaps not ideal for children, but other than that, enjoy the truly delightful company of the hosts and the atmosphere of a hotel with great character. |

Los Ojos del Guadiana Travelling along these plains brings to mind the evocation of Cervantes' world of Don Quixote and Sancho. But first let us begin with the surprise of the lagoons called the eyes (ojos) of Guadiana. The Tablas de Daimiel whence the birds emigrate after their migration. A national park of undoubted ecological value.
Montes de Toledo Leaving Ciudad Real by the N401, you come to Fernancaballero, the gateway to the Gasset reservoir. This trip provides three options for venturing further into the Montes de Toledo, the first will take you to Navas de Estena, after going round the Torre de Abraham lake. The second option leads you as far as Horcajo de los Montes, with a view of mountain ranges and plains making up an outstanding natural landscape with its own flora and fauna. You can also see the Cabañeros National Park. The third possibility takes you to Puebla de Don Rodrigo, on the outskirts of which the Guadiana, at this point full of water, can be seen.
El Corral de Comedias Probably built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, this is a unique monument where visiting theatre groups used to perform both religious and secular works.
La Plaza Mayor Only compared in beauty with the squares of San Carlos del Valle and Villanueva de los Infantes. The layout is irregular, formed by flanks with support columns
San Pedro church The oldest church in Ciudad Real. Romanesque in form.
San Agustín church Built on the old Fúcares palace, this church is another fine example of baroque architecture. Founded in 1625 by the Figueroa family, the present building nevertheless dates back to the 18th century and the cloisters remain unfinished.
Tomelloso one of the wine centres of La Mancha, has a surrounding countryside with an abundance of the typical buildings of this region called "bombos". You can see the Cart (Carro) Museums and that of the artist Antonio López and the inn (Posada) de los Portales, which is in the main square (Plaza Mayor). San Carlos del Valle has a typical 18C square. |
