Explore World Heritage Site Sintra staying in historical Lawrences Hotel.
Dating back to 1764, the Hotel Lawrences lays claim to being the oldest hotel in the Iberian Peninsula and second oldest in the world, so it certainly comes with a rich history; men such as Lord Byron (here he wrote part of the Child Heritage Pilgrimage) and William Beckford, have all stayed here. Following a long period of neglect, the present owners, Jan & Coreen Bos, purchased the Sintra property in complete ruins yet have managed to restore it to its former glory. In fact, over the years they have been able to buy a number of the building’s original pieces and antiques, the interior decoration was based on original photographs and undertaken by the owners wife, Corcen Bos. In fact, some of the furniture pieces you'll find at the Lawrences Hotel are exacts copies of the hotel’s original tables and chairs. The end result is now a fine five star hotel in the heart of Sintra with 16 individually decorated rooms (5 of them suites) that still manages to feel more like a home from home rather than a hotel: as was the declared aim of the owners when they started out. |

The romantic town of Sintra, praised by Lord Byron, is a must for those visiting the Estoril Coast. Less than twenty kilometres away, this area is particularly attractive for its lush vegetation and the original architecture of the houses, mostly dating back to the XIX century. Most important monuments are the Sintra National Palace (Paço Real or Palácio da Vila), situated in the old quarter and the Pena National Palace and Park, approx. 4.5 km from old quarter. The Queluz National Palace, 15 km from the historic centre of Sintra is also worth to be visited as are it's parks and gardens.
The Estoril Coast line and the coast to the west – at the foot of the Sintra hills is worth visiting at all the times of the year. One of the most important places for the visitor is of course, Lisbon - capital of Portugal and relatively close to Cascais. There are many places to see and things to do in this area. Cabo da Roca
The most westerly point of Europe, a magnificent cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the delightfully unspoilt countryside, the low-growing vegetation and in the spring, the white carpet of Armeria Pseudarmeria, unique to this area.
ESTORIL
An internationally known resort, Estoril has all the facilities you will need together with a natural beauty and individual architecture blending with the surroundings. It is worth taking a stroll along to Monte Estoril, where you will find many pretty buildings on the way. In the park in front of the Casino, a colourful scene pleases the eye, edged by tall, tropical palm trees. Without losing any of its natural charm, Estoril has spread and now offers many facilities for the visitor.
Beaches:
Guincho beach, lying at the foot of the Sintra hills and facing the Atlantic, should not be missed. Also visit Praia Grande and Praia da Adraga in Colares after Cabo da Roca.
Carcavelos market every Thursday morning - good bargains can often be found - and Cascais market every Wednesday morning. Food and, like Carcavelos there are many good bargains available. |

If you are coming by plane, leaving the airport you should take 2ª Circular, to Benfica. After Shell gas station, you will take a long right and a long left corner with three lanes. Take the middle. Then keep in the second from the left and follow IC19 to Sintra. At the end of it, you will arrive to Rotunda do Ramalhão, and BP gas station. Set your Km counter to zeros. Follow S.Pedro indications, first to left and then to right. In 0,7 Km you will be at the top of S. Pedro. Then, just follow that road and when your counter shows 1,7 Km turn left. You are in the historical center of Sintra. Just follow the main streets and you will easily get to Lawrence's.
From Estoril
Follow directions to Sintra, passing by the Estoril Autodrome, and carrying on straight ahead until the Ramalhão roundabout. Turn right - 100mts further on, turn left, in the direction of S.Pedro Sintra /Centro Histórico - 1st right - 1.5 Km until the actual entrance to Sintra, by the Toy Museum (Museu do Brinquedo), then pass the Tourist Office, we are 100m on the right. |
