A small grouping of cottages housing some wonderful suites and double bedrooms surround a garden with olive trees. The reason to stay at Le Hameau des Baux is all about a slower, more relaxed kind of holiday. Of course you could take one of the bicycles and pedal round the lanes but equally, the swimming pool bordered with lavender, those beautifully decorated rooms, the gardens with ample space to read a book – there’s really no need to push things. Let time stop and soak up a little of the slower, southern magic.

Nestled underneath the Alpilles – the final petering out of the Luberon mountains – the landscape here is a charming, quirky blend of limestone crags and hollows leading down to the plain surrounding Le Hameau des Baux. Here the groves of Mediterranean olive and almond trees recall the heat-hazed shimmers of a van Gogh painting. Protected by the government, this quieter, more sensual corner or France is not just wonderful for the beauty of the landscape but also for its wonderful villages and towns such as Saint Rémy and Les Baux.

Even as we enter into the rooms, the peace continues with beautifully done interiors – there is a rustic grace here with creams, pale blues and deeper reds set off by the wooden beams and giving a natural atmosphere that is just right – comfort, style and charm in the right proportions.

A tennis court, swimming pool, gardens that are made to relax in, Le Hameau des Baux mixes beauty with everything you need to get away from it all and forget, surrounded by some of the most sensual and charming scenery.

The Romans had long perfected the art of reinvention when they took the Gaul god of Glanis, made it their own and pumped the town full of money to create what became a colony in its own right; Glanum. Lying just 5 miles from the hotel Le Hameau des Baux, these are now some of the most important Roman ruins in France as well as having a great location scenery-wise.

In the other direction is Arles (10 miles) with its amphitheatre, markets and excellent cafés (including the van Gogh bar on the Place du Forum – remember that big yellow awning and midnight-blue sky pierced by great bursting stars?)

The Camargue with its wide open spaces, excellent horse-riding and traditional food is just 30 minutes in the car, the beaches only a little further.

Avignon (30 minutes) and Saint Rémy (10 minutes) all mean that Le Hameau des Baux has an excellent position for making the most of Provence. The hotel’s restaurant is open each day for lunch and Thursday and Friday evenings. Plenty of restaurants in the village just a 10 minute stroll down the path means you can experiment with what goes on nearby without having to drive or alternatively experience the cuisine offered in some of the Michelin starred restaurants found in and around Les Baux.

From Avignon follow directions for TARASCON and then ARLES. Directions then continue towards FONTVIEILLE, followed by MAUSSANE. As you come into Paradou, follow the D78D in the direction of LES BAUX, thereafter the hotel is signposted.
