Le Moulin du Château
St Laurent du Verdon - Alpes de Hautes-Provence - French Riviera & Provence
Rural
Number of rooms: 10

Up in the hills of Provence where the lavender fields tumble down to the gorge of Verdon is the village of St Laurent du Verdon where Edith and Nicolas have a beautifully restored 17th century olive mill – Le Moulin du Château. The emphasis is nature, peace and calm and excellent organic food; the hotel is part of the Slow Food network and has recently obtained the Clef Verte hospitality ecolabel.

This is still Provence but it seems light years away from Cannes and Saint Tropez; the hotel offers bicycles, excellent walking opportunities start right from the hotel (and great hiking too in the gorges and canyons of the Verdon river close by), time in the village, reading a book in the olive grove, a game of boules – it’s all very relaxed.

The hotel itself sits at the top of a wide lawn, with tables and chairs set out to make the most of that wonderful southern light. Inside, the feeling is simple and calm much like the location itself. The building is old but the décor is simple and clean rather than antiquey. The owners obviously wanted to allow the light to come in and it has worked, the rooms have a few bright colours on the bedspreads and curtains but are essentially fairly simple. If you want to take a siesta simply close the beautiful blue shutters and float away…

Immersed in nature, a beautiful sitting room with the original stone press from the olive mill, wild flowers in the spring and early summer (lavender a little later), all kinds of maps and guides to borrow, two wonderful hosts, excellent traditional cooking and unadulterated peace and calm, Le Moulin du Château is just what the doctor ordered for relaxation and indulgence in nature.

ll Activities
This stretch of the Verdon river running close to Le Moulin du Château has the deepest gorge in France, great for exploring, a little later in its downward course it forms a series of four lakes where woods tumble down to meet the water. The scenery is stunning and whether you prefer to lie on the beach instead of windsurfing, canoeing or sailing the clean air and southern warmth will send you away to another state of being!

Edith and Nicolas have a wide range of information including maps and guides for those who enjoy walking. Many of the trails are great for the family, wombling up and around the paths that drop in and out of the gorges and canyons. Horse-riding, tennis and canoeing are all nearby and climbing too is popular here but in reality you could probably do any outdoor activity you wanted, the hotel is in the centre of the regional park and the locals all seem to be very outdoorsy and happy to help with tips and suggestions.

ll Tips & Getting There
The chances are you’ll be arriving from the Autoroute A8/E80 also known as La Provençale.

Use either exit 34 (Saint Maximin-la-Sainte Baume) or 35 (Brignoles). Your aim now is turn due north and head towards Barjols and then Tavernes. By this point the road is the D71 but becomes the D13 just before the village of Montmeyan. Approximately 8 km after the village follow indications to the right for St Laurent du Verdon. Another 2km and you will arrive in the village itself.

ll Client Comments
Please feel free to send us your personal hotel review on this hotel. You may wonder why all the assessments we have on line are positive. Well, apart from the simple fact that we try to include only what we consider to be the best accommodations, there’s another important reason to bear in mind. Any hotel that receives 3 negative feedbacks is automatically taken out of our selection.

“The owners were very nice, friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good, but especially the dinner! We would go back there and can only recommend the hotel.”
