There are not many places like the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park left. Nature is still the master and many of the plants and animals based here, have long disappeared elsewhere. The sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean are truly beautiful and some of the best coastline and beaches in Portugal are easily reached. Within this scenario can be found the Monte Velho, a simple, bright and comfortable lodging that fits in comfortably within the environment that encompasses it. The warm colours and feel to the place (ochre, blue and violet to mention a few) are augmented by a series of modern paintings throughout. The yellow room where breakfast is taken, for example, holds a picture of a shoal of fish that actually seem to come and go to and from the canvas – a nice, humorous touch. Warm sunny days or balmy nights can be spent on the hammock by the front porch reading a book or just contemplating the Alentejo countryside and taking in its inimitable fragrance. The hotel also organises donkey rides, bike and boat trips and even offers surf lessons.

The small town of Aljezur is divided in two distinct halves: to the west of the river is rather drab old quarter, Moorish in origin and straggling along the side of a hill below the scant ruins of a tenth-century castle, while across the river to east lies a more modern settlement. Hunched on a hill and cramped by the river, Odeceixe is the last village before Alentejo.
Fairly quiet little place, at least outside July and August.
Also visit Carrapateira, Bordeira Beach and Amado Beach.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Lisbon:Take the A2 motorway until you reach Grândola. Take the IP8 until you almost reach Sines and take the direction Odemira and Aljezur. Continue on the N-120 direction South andtake the detour on the right to Sagres. Continue until Carrapateira. Cross the village and continue until you find the detour on the left where you will see the sign for Vilarinha.

From Faro: Take the Via do Infante until Lagos. Once there take the N-125 in direction to Vila do Bispo where you should turn to Carrapateira. When you reach the wind farm keep a lookout for the detour on the right indicating Vilarinha.

Once there just follow the signs to Monte Velho.
