| Originally the rural house of the local Blacksmith, Monte da Fornalha has been renovated and transformed from a state of ruin into a very attractive accommodation. Nevertheless, it retains its true Alentejo character as typified by it’s large chimneys, enormous lounge that is airy in summer and warm in winter, white walls, beamed ceilings and pervading air of simplicity. This is certainly not at the expense of creature comforts, however. Decoration is of simple excellent taste, with perhaps just a hint of Moroccan. The swimming pool is excellent too. Orlanda, the hostess, is utterly welcoming and willing to help on things to do and see. And there are many. Fornalha is located between the pretty towns of Estremoz and Borba (which holds the annual Wine Festival in November) whilst the surrounding area is excellent for horseback riding, trekking and bird watching. |

Serra D'Ossa, one of the few range of hills in the Alentejo, has a very rich heritage of past civilisations. Here you can find pre-historic monuments, Roman roads, temples and bridges, Gothic and Manueline (the Portuguese gothic characterstic of the age of discoveries, XV-XVI c.) edifications, baroque churches and palaces.
Aldeia da Serra: Anta da Candeeira (Dolmen)
Redondo: Igreja Matriz de Nª. Sº. Da Anunciação (church).
Arraiolos - The 14th-century castle seems overwhelmed by the town walls and looming 16th-century Igreja (church) do Salvador. Typically,as in the rest of this region, houses in Arraiolos are low and white, with a blue trim to ward off the devil. The principal sight in Arraiolos, however, is of women stitching at their bright wool rugs in the shadowy rooms behind the main street. The City Hall has a fine display of locally made carpets from different eras. It is the birthplace of Dom Nuno Alvares Pereira and home of the \" noiva de Arraiolos\" a legendary bride who took a fortnight to adorn herself only to appear at her wedding in a shepherd´s cloak.
Évora Grandiose monumental town contrast with the marked rural characteristics of the region. (World Heritage town)

| From Lisbon: Take the highway A2/A6 heading for Évora/Estremoz; turn off on the Vila Viçosa/Borba/Alandroal signpost. After the toll gate turn to your right at the T-junction heading for Estremoz. Some 500 meters ahead you will see an outdoor of Delta coffee cup, turn into a dirt road on your right hand side. Travel for approx. 1 km inland following the signposts “Monte da Fornalha” until you see the tipical southern Portuguese white chimneys on your left hand side, you have then reached Monte da Fornalha. |

Please feel free to send us your personal hotel review on this hotel. You may wonder why all the assessments we have on line are positive. Well, apart from the simple fact that we try to include only what we consider to be the best accommodations, there’s another important reason to bear in mind. Any hotel that receives 3 negative feedbacks is automatically taken out of our selection:
We spent a wonderful three days. The rooms are beautiful, the location perfectly quiet and the hospitality and breakfasts could not have been better. It is the perfect spot to headquarter while exploring the surrounding villages. Borba is a ten minute drive and its multitude of casual restaurants take care of your dining needs. The wines and olives of the region are exceptional. We have sent several couples to this place and everyone had the same experience as us. We will return. TB, England |
