Monte dos Pensamentos (the House of Thoughts) is a charming traditional house: white, Moorish style encompassed within refreshing arches, fragrant eucalyptus trees and an olive garden where a number of animals are able to roam (lambs, ducks, chickens that provide the eggs visitors will appreciate at breakfast). The owners have been very attentive to detail and this is reflected in the decoration throughout. The communal living room has an enormous fireplace and includes painted furniture, religious engravings an impressive array of faience on the wall. There is also a liberal use of Alentejan marble and fine wood throughout. Rooms in the main house are as charming as the small apartments – all having been decorated in the authentic Alentejo style. Monte dos Pensamentos is also close by to the attractive walled town of Estremoz and other historic cities of the region.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From the A6 motorway (whether coming from Lisbon or Spain), take the ESTREMOZ exit and go onto the N4 main road. Some 50 metres on turn in direction of Estremoz. 100 metres further on you will find a roundabout and head in the direction of ÉVORA/LISBOA (going under the A6 motorway). 100 metres further on you will come to a crossing and turn right in direction of “TURISMO RURAL”. Carry on some 50 metres and you will arrive at the Monte dos Pensamentos.

My fiancée and I stayed at the Monte dos Pensamentos at the beginning of May 2005 and it was wonderful experience being able to stay in such a refuge in the middle of the Alentejo. The apartment always had a pleasant temperature, however hot it was outside. Decoration was perfect, not overly heavy but just right in keeping with the culture of the region. The areas are ample, coming with a kitchen, small appliances and small living room with chimney and a bedroom with enormous beds, as well as a small bathroom. It also has a swimming and large garden which is perfect to relax in and take in the sun. The Monte is perfectly located for visiting the region of the Alentejo and the people are very kind. Without doubt, a great place.
