The six cottages that make up the wonderful Montes do Telheiro started off life as workers houses where “telhas” (or tiles) were made, hence the name Telheiro. Though these are no longer produced, what remains is a beautifully restored estate providing comfort with a typical Alentejo style and respect for nature. Hats off to Clara for taking over this abandoned group of buildings and refurbishing them to their original picturesque design. The setting is idyllic as the houses are located in the middle of typical Alentejo countryside, with its rolling plains and cork trees to be seen for miles on end. The great beaches of the protected Alentejo coast are also relatively nearby (some 20km of pleasant, isolated country lanes to get there). Clara herself has personally taken care of the decoration for each cottage, and being an interior decorator by profession has had the keen eye to tastefully combine the traditional rustic elements such as the old Portuguese faience and motifs with modern comforts and furnishings. Each house, for example, is equipped with all the appliances and furniture necessary to provide for a relaxing stay. Activities include biking, horse riding, trekking and soon will include a hunting reserve. Perhaps you will just want to enjoy the privileged location and relax. One of our favourite Secretplaces in the region and an ideal one for the traveller looking for total isolation and Alentejo tradition within a natural setting.

Vila Nova de Mil Fontes
In the the open Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, Vila Nova de Milfontes is one of the places in great demand during holidays. The beaches are its main attraction, although lately the clear waters of the river Mira and its beautiful estuary have become another sought after place.

Santa Clara-a-Velha
Is a small rural village where it is still possible to encounter the authentic Alentejo.The popular architecture of whitewashed houses crossed by an intense blue, typical of this region, and the small Church in the main square deserve an attentive look.

Zambujeira do Mar
Still remains as one of the last paradises on Alentejo's southwest coast. Its beaches constitute one of its most important attractions, but there is a lot to discover along the coastline, part of the protected area of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. On the top of the cliff, the small village, witness since ancient times of the population's fishing activities, is the perfect natural terrace to stare at an amazing ocean's view.

Odemira
Opening its way through hills and valleys to the ocean, the river Mira describes at a certain point a singular deviation. This was the place chosen, thousands of years ago, by Roman and Arabic people to settle down. The river gave Odemira it's name and it's importance along the centuries. The official charter was conceeded in 1256 by the king D. Afonso III to Odemira, which consequently has contributed for the community's development. The village has expanded along the mountain slopes with its beautiful white houses ornamented with colourful flowers.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Lisbon: The trip from Lisbon should take some 2 1/5 hours. Take either the “Vasco da Gama” or “25 de Abril” Bridges crossing the Tagus river and carry on the A2 motorway in direction of the Algarve. After passing the Grândola service station, take the Beja/Ferrreira exit, passing the toll booths in direction of Algarve/Ourique. Pass the village of Mimosa and some 10 minutes later you will come to a crossing. Here, take the turn for the right in direction of Odemira/Praias do Oeste/Barragem Monte da Rocha. Some 34km (20 miles) there is another crossing where you should take a left in direction of Monchique/Barragem Sta Clara/Estação Caminhos de Ferro. 50 metres ahead make a right turn onto a dirt track wher you will come to the only house you see from the crossing(a white house with burgundy borders). It is the only one in the vicinity. This is the owners house where she will be waiting and who will then take you to the Montes do Telheiro nearby.
