Now Muxima is an interesting word. Is it Portuguese? No. Is it Spanish? No. Then perhaps it’s Latin? The answer is still no. In fact, it means “heart” in the Kimbundu dialect of Angola. A name that is much justified in this case as both Africa and this whole place is very close to the heart of Sofia and Jorge, the charming owners.

Their idea was to build a space in this beautiful part of Southern Portugal that was anything but ordinary or conventional, as well as have a close spiritual connection to Africa. Sofia and Jorge have a deep affection for this continent, having worked and travelled there on many occasions, but being widely travelled they have also taken inspiration from other exotic lands, and the end result of their dreams is the utterly impressive Muxima.

It really is an amalgam of various exotic places with an African heart, as even the names of the rooms will testify - Krabi, Micondó, Mangalore, Coba, Chaouen, for example – and all objects have a meaning, blankets from Mexico, lanterns from Morocco, textiles from India, earthy coloured “tadelakt” in the bathrooms as well as the back to basics approach – some will call it minimalist – of doing the simple things really well. So the little pleasures such as the warm glow of the light as night falls, delicious breakfast served with home made bread and the intense earth colours in and around the Muxima make for a special stay.

ll	Tips & Getting There

FROM LISBON:
Take the A2 Motorway and exit at SINES. From here head in direction of PORTO CÔVO. You will come to VILA NOVA DE MILFONTES, and then you will pass the RIVER MIRA Bridge. Some 15 KM LATER TURN RIGHT in direction of CABO SARDÃO, and head towards Lagos. When you enter the Algarve and can see ODECEIXE, then that means you will only be some 15 km from ALJEZUR. To get to Muxima, take the ALJEJUR exit in direction of LAGOS, carry on for some 800 metres and turn onto a rural road on the left, before you start on the curves you will see a signpost warning of the danger of falling rocks.

FROM THE SOUTH:
Take the VIA DO INFANTE highway in direction of LAGOS-BENSAFIM. Take the exit in direction of ALJEJUR. After a right turn, you will come across some whitewashed houses. Turn on the first road heading in its direction From here, you will pass a green waste disposal container and carry on past a small bridge. Eventually the road will split and carry on to the right in direction of some houses that are always on the left side (white with some blue). Rising gradually for some 300 metres, you will eventually arrive. You cannot see the Muxima from the road due to the trees.
