Sobriety and architectural elegance seem to sum up this late 17th century palace, each stone and wall suggesting a rich historic and artistic patrimony. After many years of neglect it was thankfully taken over by Jon Ugalde and Ana Amillano in 1997, who with great effort and dedication have transformed such a historic location into a fine and welcoming lodging. The imposing main façade is crowned with a shield registering the words “It’s broken but my faith will not change”, in reference to the broken sword that appears on many of Samaniego’s coats of arms. Inside, the visitor’s faith will also be rekindled in the art of hospitality. John and Ana do their utmost to make guests feel at ease and the warm happy colours inside combine well with the modest but still comfortable decoration. Likewise, rooms are simple, tastefully furnished and equipped with all modern comforts. The excellent location of the beautiful village of Samaniego must also be mentioned, protected as it is by the natural barrier of Sierra de Toloño, one of the factors that make the surrounding countryside so enjoyable at any time of the year. A final word of note. The excellent in-house restaurant is only open on the weekends.

Framed by the stony mass of the Cantabrian Mountains, a rural Mediterranean-type landscape with grapevines and olive groves creates the stunning scenery of the Rioja wine region. Centuries of history are preserved in a wealth of historic towns and villages such as Samaniego, Laguardia, Lanciego and Labastida to name a few. Rioja Alavesa is just over an hour from Bilbao and an ideal short break.

Capital of Rioja Alavesa, this precious medieval town and surrounding area are full of artistic monuments and sites. The city walls date back to the 13th century, the ornate Gothic facade of Santa Maria de los Reyes church is 14th century and its polychromy is in perfect condition and there's much more. For example La Hoya, the Bronze Age village discovered in 1935.

Rioja is well reputed for its production of fine dry reds (predominantly from Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha), though there has always been a production of classy whites (especially oak aged, and as of late barrel fermented -from local Viura and Malvasia grapes-). The Minimum Ageing Requirements, by which its wines are classified, have impregnated other Spanish DO's standards. The classification, which is on the verge of disappearance, for it says nothing of the quality of the wines, yields following wine types: \"Sin Crianza\", wine with little or no ageing in oak casks, often referred to as Vino Joven or Cosechero and being comprised of 100% Rioja authorized grapes, as with all Rioja guaranteed origin wines. \"Crianza\": Wine in its third year, matured for at least one year in oak cask. \"Reserva\": Should be carefully selected wines, aged for at least three years, of which at least one is in oak cask and the rest in bottle. Finally come the \"Gran Reserva\", a wine which has been aged at least two years in oak casks and at least three years in bottle.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Burgos: Take the A1 northeast to Miranda de Ebro and then the A68 towards Zaragoza. Exit the A68 at Cenicero and follow the signs to El Ciego on the L-211. Shortly after El Ciego turn left towards Vila Bueno de Alava on the L-3214 and on to Samaniego.
