Palazzo Guiscardo
Pietrasanta (Lucca) - Lucca - Tuscany
Village
Number of rooms: 8

Pietrasanta is a classy little town on the Tuscany coast, close to Pisa and Lucca, that keeps her years well with a lively central piazza and lots of great opportunities for spoiling yourself with some of the excellent local dishes which feature the best of sea and mountain. With a well-preserved historic centre and beaches, water sports, golf, trekking and culture all in ample supply, the town is a little gem, even Michelangelo used to come here to select exactly the right marble for his sculptures. Still a thriving artistic community, Pietrasanta is well-known as a centre for sculpture in bronze and marble. Fernando Botero, the Columbian artist famous for his curvaceous sensual figures, has a studio here and many of his sculptures are dotted around the town.

It is then quite fitting that the Palazzo Guiscardo acts as a gallery space for local artists and the rooms with those deep and sensual shades of colour become a peaceful refuge from the sun, an overindulgent lunch or simply the place to practise that wonderful art in itself, the siesta.

When you stay in a small and intimate hotel such as this, with just 8 rooms, you can be assured that the level of attention is going to hit the mark and Paola, the manager, is soothingly sure of the assertion that if you’re going to do something, it’s worth doing it right. The hotel is located in what was a noble house built towards the end of the 1800s in the Liberty style. The restoration is sensitive and combines the modern elements we expect in an unobtrusive manner. The bathrooms stand out for the use of great big massage tubs in some of the rooms and shower saunas in others with lots of the local precious marbles. It is essentially then a classically-styled residence with some hints to a more modern relaxation, the rooms avoiding fragile pastels for bold, deep and sensual hues.

Waking up in the morning and heading down for breakfast should be a pleasant surprise given the meagre portions we normally expect in Italy. Here it is surprisingly different with biological yoghurts, all kinds of jams and honeys from a local cooperative, hand made cakes, and tuscan wholemeal breads, traditional cheeses and croissants. Once you have begun the morning in style you may as well continue that way; a room for massages and other treats allow you to continue this theme of indulgence throughout the day.

All in all this would be a great place to come for a lazy few days and indulge in the good life with just enough cultural and artistic stimuli around to keep you going before aperativo time. Alternatively, with the sea being so close, the kids may want to come to though there may be some bargaining going on between who wants to pass the afternoon in nearby Lucca and who wants to go to the beach.

ll Activities
The hotel is located slap bang in the centro storico, the beautiful old part of town so from here you wander through the piazze and backstreets as much as you like with lots of excellent examples of trattorie and bars.

Beyond eating and enjoying la dolce vita, there’s a great spectrum of possibilities in and around Pietrasanta including walks in the foothills of the nearby Apuan Alps, beach things on the great stretches of sand (the hotel has special rates for the “concession” stretches) or cultural leanings aplenty for those a bit more artistically inclined.

Well worth a visit are the sculpture collections in the Museo dei Bozzetti (0584 795 500). Entry is free and the museum gives a great introduction into some of the styles of work going on in the region as well as an insight into the process of creating a sculpture. Open in the afternoons, the museum closes Sunday and Monday (Winter) and Monday (Summer).

ll Tips & Getting There
Pisa airport is very handy at just 30km away and though this seems like a small regional airport, it is now attracting a vast number of low cost airlines from all over Europe as well as the traditional carriers.

Pietrasanta is easily reached by train being located on the main Pisa-Genova line with Florence and other cities in Tuscany and beyond fairly easy to get to.

If you do drive then the way is fairly easy. Pietrasanta is 2km from the VERSILIA exit of the A12 motorway running up the Tuscan coastline between Pisa and Genova. Once you have exited follow signs for Pietrasanta centre. These will lead you first of along Via Unità d’Italia until a roundabout where you will take the last exit and drive along Via Apua towards the town centre with the mountains behind. Continue straight until the junction at the end where you should turn left. After 200m turn right and pass under the railway, turning right again at the end of the street into what should now be Via Marconi. Continue for just 50 metres before you pass into the street running immediately back to your left, Via Provinciale Vallecchia, the street of the hotel.
