Traditional Canary Island Parador, La Gomera

A heavenly setting with fabulous views of the ocean (set as it is on a cliff with Tenerife and the Teide in the background) gardens brimming with sub-tropical exotic plants, and a typical Island architecture, make up the main reference points of the lovely old-fashioned Parador de la Gomera. But that’s just the exterior. Inside its bright walls encrusted with volcanic rocks, the combination of Castilian and Isabelline style decoration really do provide for an authentic La Gomera experience. Even the sweet smelling aroma of the local wood, which is used liberally throughout, adds to the distinctive atmosphere. The parador is also replete with many maritime references and navigational instruments as part of its furnishings. This is, after all, the island of Columbus from which he set sail on the way to discovering America. The other major plus point of a stay here must surely be the island itself. It remains one of the least affected by tourism in the whole of the Canaries and visitors here are still received with an authentic welcome. La Gomera has long retained its strong indigenous rural culture. Couple this with its breathtaking volcanic vegetation and scenery, such as that found in the Garajonay National Park, for example (a World Heritage site) and a stay here becomes a thoroughly compelling experience.

Garajonay National Park, which occupies more than 10% of the total area of the island, was created to preserve the botanical treasures. In 1986, it was declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. The 4,000 hectares (9,880 acres) of the Park are crowned by the Alto de Garajonay at 1,487 meters (4,877 ft.) above sea level. The ecosystem accommodates a multitude of native invertebrates and two species of endangered birds: the long-toed and laurel pigeons, truly living relics.
A complete network of paths facilitate exploration of this exceptional forest. In the Visitor’s Center of \"Juego de Bolas\", ample information is provided about the Park’s characteristics and services, and guided tours may be engaged.

Los Organos: formation of spectacular basalt columns only visible from the seaside
Roque Caño: this rock is the symbol of Vallehermoso and evidence of the former volcanic activity.

Vallehermoso has an interesting centre grouped around its parish church, with several stately buildings.

ll	Tips & Getting There

The Parador is set on the so-called Lomo de la Horca, to the right of the avenue which links the San Sebastián quay with the town, 60 m above sea level. The island is reached by boat or plane from Puerto de los Cristianos in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
