ll Activities
Viana do Castelo:
Spread along the north bank of the Lima estuary (where one can take trips on typical boats), this town is famous for its handicrafts and colourful regional costumes.
Festivities include:
Romaria da Senhora da Agonia in August.
Festa do Traje (Costume Fair)

Barcelos:
Medieval walled town and a dungeon of the same epoch. Worthy of a visit are the Ceramics Museum (Museu de Olaria), the Archeologic Museum of the Dukes’ Palace, the mother-church (Romanesque-Gothic), and the churches of Terço, Cruzes and Benedictine Convent. Walking tours around the ancient Jewish quarter or in the streets with medieval houses and Baroque manors; boat tours on the Cávado river.

Ponte de Lima:
Beautiful small town with a Roman bridge and medieval towers. The region is renowned for its large number of manor houses (accomodation provided in privately-owned houses).

Viana do Castelo:
Deserving special mention are the parish church, the ancient Paços do Concelho (both Gothic), Casa da Misericórdia (Mannerist, with a sacred art treasure), the medieval Casa dos Arcos, the convent of Santa Ana (16th-century) and the Regional Museum. Up above and dominating the city is the sanctuary of Santa Luzia, with a fantastic view of the town, the river and the ocean.

ll Tips & Getting There
From Porto: Take the E 1 heading for Viana do Castelo; once there follow the signs for “Hospital Distrital de Viana do Castelo” (Hospital), it will be on your right hand side; after passing it head for Valença and Spain, following the N 13 heading north you will go through two tunnels. Aprox. 3,5 km after the second tunnel you will find the “Turismo de Habitação” sign post to on your left hand side, make the turn here to your right following the “Cap. Boa Viagem” and “Poço Negro” signs, you will eventually find the signs for “Quinta da Boa Viagem” until you arrive at a red gate: the entrance to the Quinta.

Please feel free to send us your personal hotel review on this hotel. You may wonder why all the assessments we have on line are positive. Well, apart from the simple fact that we try to include only what we consider to be the best accommodations, there’s another important reason to bear in mind. Any hotel that receives 3 negative feedbacks is automatically taken out of our selection.

"What a wonderful place Quinta de Boa Viagem is. The name means "good voyage" and indeed the whole experience was just that. Upon arriving, Jose, the owner, took me on a lovely tour of all the strikingly beautiful and historic grounds, insisting I make myself at home everywhere, not just in my cottage. Over the course of my eight nights there, Jose proved to be a superior host, always thoughtful and quick to help. The cottage itself was of the same quality as a high-end hotel, only better because it came equipped with an efficient little kitchen and a balcony overlooking small farms and the ocean in the distance. The cottage interior was superbly clean and modern and a real joy to call home for a few days. The grounds of the estate are quite old, with gorgeous flowers, lemon and orange trees, a small vineyard, and fountains scattered around that create the most relaxing atmosphere imaginable. There is a small pool and a soccer/football patch if you are visiting in warmer months. Breakfast was wonderful each morning, served at whatever time was good for the guests, and included plenty of fresh homemade rolls, cheese, ham, jams, fresh juices, and tea/coffee.

The location of Boa Viagem is unique; it is perched just about the outskirts of the town Viana de Castelo. It is not in the countryside, but this proved to be a good thing. I had a car but it would be possible to get to the estate without one, given trains run regularly to Viana and then it would be a short taxi ride from the station to Boa Viagem. This area of Portugal is lush and full of interest, particularly if you enjoy rural culture and outdoor adventures. The local beaches were excellent and it's a short half hour drive to the National Park for outstanding hiking. Also, be sure to visit Ponte de Lima, another short 20 minute drive from the cottages.

A word about the directions for getting to Boa Viagem. As I was not familiar with driving in Portugal prior to this visit, I got quite lost and drove to the Spanish border (just 30 minutes away so it wasn't terribly far), because I didn't realize you must take the exit for Viana de Castelo off the highway. You need to drive through the town itself, not go around it on the highway. The turnoff for the tiny road that winds up to Boa Viagem is difficult to find too. It is between two buildings just before a traffic light and the parking lot for a small restaurant. There's a very small building on the left there too that I used as a guide once I knew where I was going since the signs (both the Turisimo and the one for Boa Viagem itself) are very small.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!"
