Viana do Castelo: Spread along the north bank of the Lima estuary (where one can take trips on typical boats), this town is famous for its handicrafts and colourful regional costumes. Festivities include: Romaria da Senhora da Agonia in August. Festa do Traje (Costume Fair)
Barcelos: Medieval walled town and a dungeon of the same epoch. Worthy of a visit are the Ceramics Museum (Museu de Olaria), the Archeologic Museum of the Dukes’ Palace, the mother-church (Romanesque-Gothic), and the churches of Terço, Cruzes and Benedictine Convent. Walking tours around the ancient Jewish quarter or in the streets with medieval houses and Baroque manors; boat tours on the Cávado river.
Ponte de Lima: Beautiful small town with a Roman bridge and medieval towers. The region is renowned for its large number of manor houses (accomodation provided in privately-owned houses).
Viana do Castelo Deserving special mention are the mother-church, the ancient Paços do Concelho (both Gothic), Casa da Misericórdia (Mannerist, with a sacred art treasure), the medieval Casa dos Arcos, the convent of Santa Ana (16th-century), and the Regional Museum. Up above and dominating the city is the sanctuary of Santa Luzia, with a fantastic view of the town, the river and the ocean.
Porto
(Classified in the UNESCO World Heritage list) The North’s most important city lent its name to the famous wine and to Portugal. One must stroll around its typical quarters (especially the area on the waterside, the zona ribeirinha) and its bustling downtown. To visit: the Stock Exchange Palace, the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, the church of Cedofeita (Romanesque), the Clérigos tower (Porto’s ex-libris of Baroque architecture) and church; the church of São Francisco, of Romanesque origin, with its interior all covered with gilded carvings, and the church of Carmo, with tiled façades. Museums: Soares dos Reis, Casa de Serralves (contemporary art), Casa-Museu de Guerra Junqueiro and the Romantic Museum of Quinta da Macieirinha. One should not miss a visit to the wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and free tastings of the famous port wine. |

| From Lisbon: Take the motorway A1 heading north to Porto. Once in Porto follow the signs to the A28 (direction Viana do Castelo). Follow the A28 for approximately 60 km and leave the highway at exit 21 (Saída 21/Exit 21) onto the N103 main road, in direction of Braga/Barcelos. You will arrive at a roundabout, follow the direction of Anha (N 13), some 4 km ahead follow the direction of Barroselas/Vila Verde. After about 5 km turn left at the sign to the Quinta da Bouça D’Arques. Follow the signs until you reach the Quinta. |

Please feel free to send us your personal hotel review on this hotel. You may wonder why all the assessments we have on line are positive. Well, apart from the simple fact that we try to include only what we consider to be the best accommodations, there’s another important reason to bear in mind. Any hotel that receives 3 negative feedbacks is automatically taken out of our selection.
The Quinta is located in the middle of some vineyard and is beautifully restored, with very nice surroundings. Isabel, the owner, gave us a very friendly welcome. The rooms are very spacious, nicely decorated and comfortable. The Kitchenette has all that is needed to have a simple meal and the breakfast provided is of very good quality, with fresh bread, I believe home made jams. There is a choice between rooms in the restored house or in new apartments, which fit very well with the decor. We stayed in the old buildings. Viana do Castello, the most nearby town, is a very nice place, currently applying for World Heritage town status and where you can find a lot of good, affordable restaurants (the north of Portugal is significantly cheaper than Algarve). One word of caution : This area of Portugal is pretty rainy outside July/August so don't go there in Autumn if you can't stand humid climate/slightly humid buildings.” AVS, England
