Perhaps the first thing that struck us as soon as we arrived at the Quinta da Dourada – along with the charming hosts and surrounding nature, of course - was the silence. It seemed to be interrupted only by the singing of the birds and the leaves rustling from the 300 year old tree. Notwithstanding this gentle breeze induced “whoosh”, there was nothing else and we immediately fell in love it – total peace. But when you look at it, it couldn’t have been any other way, as the Quinta da Dourada is located in the very heart of S. Mamede Natural Park, a truly privileged location for anyone who prizes nature and who wants to observe the plentiful fauna and flora here. The nearest road, for example (and a small one at that) is a kilometre away and the countryside spreads as far as the eye can see, so as Nuno, the owner, rightly says this is a place “where the silence stops time”.

Families will also love it for whilst the grown ups can breath in the pure mountain air and just relax, the kids will enjoy danger free bike rides and treks. Even toddlers can run amok freely.

Now we know what the outside is like but what about the house itself? Thankfully, it fits in perfectly with the external environment, a true Alentejo place in every sense with whitewashed walls and a simple rustic interior of undoubted good taste. And that goes for the 2 double rooms and 4 apartments which, being housed in separate areas, further add to the feeling of total autonomy should you wish.

The São Mamede Natural Park is nearby and wonderful to visit either by car or on foot. Not to be missed.
Neither is a visit to the lovely Marvão and Castelo de Vide, the two points of reference of this region and absolutely fascinating.
In Portalegre, don’t forget to visit the historic centre of town with its castle, cathedral and St. Francis and St Bernard convents. Wine tasting is also available in Portalegre. Nuno can organise it for you

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Estremoz:
Take the IP2 main road to Portalegre (some 220 Km)

Once in Portalegre follow the signs in direction of Serra and Salão Frio.

You will eventually go up a steep slope, until you get to Salão Frio. Cross it and you will go through a crossing indicating S. Bento. Carry on for a further 2 km. eventually you will come to a signpost indicating the Quinta da Dourada. Follow the sign.
