Peneda Geres National Park: Recognised by the International Union for Nature Conservation because of the variety of the landscape, plant and animal species, habitat and cultural heritage. A mountainous area (Gerês, Soajo and Amarela). The park has offices in Montalegre, Arcos de Valdevez and Gerês, and lies across three administrative districts and 5 municipalities.
Viana do Castelo: Spread along the north bank of the Lima estuary (where one can take trips on typical boats), this town is famous for its handicrafts and colourful regional costumes. Festivities include: Romaria da Senhora da Agonia in August. Festa do Traje (Costume Fair)
Barcelos: Medieval walled town and a dungeon of the same epoch. Worthy of a visit are the Ceramics Museum (Museu de Olaria), the Archeologic Museum of the Dukes’ Palace, the mother-church (Romanesque-Gothic), and the churches of Terço, Cruzes and Benedictine Convent. Walking tours around the ancient Jewish quarter or in the streets with medieval houses and Baroque manors; boat tours on the Cávado river.
Póvoa de Lanhoso: The castle built on the top of the hill known as Monte do Pilar is the most important monument in the region and, according to tradition, D. Teresa, the mother of the first king of Portugal was held prisoner there in the twelfth century after the Battle of São Mamede, in which mother and son fought on opposite sides.
In the seventeenth century, the monastery of Nossa Senhora do Pilar was built next to the castle.
In the nearby village of Fonte Arcada is a twelfth-century Romanesque church that is well worth a visit.
Situated in the heart of the vinho verde demarcated wine region, Póvoa de Lanhoso is well known for its granite quarrying and cutting industries and its remarkable goldsmith´s work (filigree). |
