The Quinta de Abôl de Baixo is situated within a 70-acre farm of vineyards, fruit trees and gardens right where the river Tamega meets its larger brother the Douro. It consists of a group of properties dating back to 15th century and King Philip I, which the Abôl family have finished restoring in keeping with the original arquitecture – granitic stone, wooden ceilings and black slab floors.

A true expedition to the medieval times, by way of this gathering of houses nesting on a green slope over the Tamega, not far from the Torrão reservoir. There is a total of 9 bedrooms – 3 within small houses – that are comfortable, well furnished and have bathrooms that, surprisingly, feature hydro-massage tubs. The common meeting place is the main house, where we will find an assortment of social games such as cards and chess.

We are in wine country par excellence and more specifically in “vinho verde” territory – a very young and light wine that foreign visitors find extremely attractive. Less than a mile away we can find thermal treatments and small river beaches. The nearest town is Penafiel (10,000 inhab.), that claims to be the second oldest in Portugal.

All this area is well known for its archaeological finds that date back to when the Roman Empire extended its dominions all the way to the Atlantic.

This area is famous for the Green Wine and if the guests like wine, it will be possible to organize a walk with wine tasting (needs to be booked in advance).

It is also possible to organize walks or visit the Quinta da Aveleda, with wine tasting, and also other estates in the Port Wine area (Régua and Pinhão).

From Porto:
Follow the motorway in direction of VILA REAL, exit at PENAFIEL SUL-ENTRE OS RIOS, carry on the road until TORR (+/- 13km) and once at the thermals of INATEL turn right in direction of EJA. At the top of that road turn left and the Quinta do Abôl de Baixo will appear on your right.
