Unspoilt heaven by the lake
A small lakeside hotel set in unspoilt countryside, with wonderful views over one of Europe's cleanest lakes. The lake is relatively unknown, with a busy day being the sight of five boats. In summer the mature fruit and flower gardens lead guests down to the shore where there are a variety of water sports on offer. Winter is not to be outdone, however, as it offers marvellous local walks – there is a complete absence of traffic noise all year round. Quinta do Barranco also offers a variety of speciality-guided courses, such as bird watching. The resident owner, Frank and Daniela, who live in and run the establishment with personal care and attention and have meticulously built up the Quinta into what it has now become, "A Paradise in Portugal". They also offer a variety of year long courses such as bird watching and massage.
It really is a lovely place and this small intimate retreat for peace and relaxation serves up eight double en-suite rooms, a Family Suite and a Honeymoon Suite. It has 2 large drawing rooms with log fires, sauna, one roofed terrace, one vine covered terrace and various lawns within the 2 acre garden that drops down towards the water.

For the active there's plenty to do. Swimming, sailing, canoeing and fishing are available for beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike right on your doorstep, while a vast sparsely populated countryside dotted with small Alentejan "montes" set amidst hillsides of cork trees awaits all walkers; we'll even provide the dogs if you want some company!
The views over the lake bring a new surprise every minute, while offering a fascinating variety of birds and animals for the wildlife enthusiast.
From hoopoes and herons to tree frogs and mongooses, each season brings its own delights, and the Quinta runs guided birdwatching trips throughout the year covering the whole of Southern Portugal.
There are Well Being courses with accredited therapists, and local masseuses are always willing to smooth away those city stresses even when the Quinta's not running a course; of course the Quinta's sauna, close to the lake, is very much in demand!
But it's not just nature and water lovers who benefit from the Quinta's geographical location in this sparsely populated region - the roads of the area, with beautiful sweeping curves and very little traffic, bring motorcylists from all over the world and the Quinta's staff are always on hand to promote their favourite rides!
However, if you're thinking of a holiday here, whether you're the active type or just want to relax, it wouldn't be fair not to mention the lashings of delicious food always on offer, and for those who want to learn how we do it there are Cookery courses at various times throughout the year.

From Lisbon:
Take the A2 towards the Algarve.
After roughly 175km turn right, signposted Odemira.
After 13km turn left, signposted S. Martinho das Amoreiras.
After 8km, arriving in S. Martinho das Amoreiras, take signs to Portimao.
After about 10km, at T junction, turn left, signposted Monchique and Portimao.
After 8km, turn left, back on yourself, signposted Cortebrique and Cortes Pereiras. This road is 300 mts before Santa Clara, and it is usually best to continue on and turn round at the village in order to be sure of the right turning.
Follow this road for 8-9 kms until you see a signpost for Quinta do Barranco da Estrada on your right.
Follow the Quinta do Barranco da Estrada signs for a further 4 kms, and you've arrived. |

I had a glorious time and it really did feel like the most Secret Place - magical. A real remote retreat, with beautiful almost tropical gardens, a clean huge freshwater lake, lovely rooms and fantastic food and service.
