Peace and quiet sophistication in Marvão
The area in and around Marvão is simply lovely, and right in the heart of the São Mamede hills, 700 metres up, there lies the Quinta de do Barrieiro, enveloped in luxurious, verdant flora. This very green contrasts with the multiple colours of the Quinta itself - ochre and blue to name but a couple, but there are more. Indeed, the light and strong earthy colours are one of the things that sets the Alentejo apart from other regions. But notwithstanding the house’s attributes, it is Maria and José’s hospitable nature and eye for details that makes the Quinta do Barrieiro what it is – a perfect place to get a little bit of peace and quiet within a typical setting – without sacrificing a certain modernity and sophistication - just witness the abstract paintings throughout or Maria’s own sculptures, for example. For more strenuous activities, the Quinta do Barrieiro works in conjunction with a local company to provide numerous activities such as all terrain bikes, canoeing and other radical sports. Otherwise, just sit back and enjoy what nature and man are able to combine together.

| As the Quinta do Barrieiro is located in the heart of a Natural Park there are many interesting activities to enjoy, the majority of which are nature orientated, such as treks to near to the nearby dam, for example. For more radical activities, a local company can offer a number of things to do, including Canoeing, all terrain biking, climbing, jeep rides, rappel, amongst other things. |

From Lisbon: Take either the "Vasco da Gama" or "25 Abril" bridges and go on the A2 motorway, until the exit for ÉVORA/ESPANHA (Spain). Take the A6 motorway until you exit at ESTREMOZ/PORTALEGRE and immediately take the old main road that goes to ELVA, turn off in direction of ESTREMOZ/PORTALEGRE. Go round Estremoz always following diretions for Portalegre and then take the IP2 road (again always following in direction of Portalegre) until you come to the directions for MARVÃO. Pass the village of MONTE PALEIROS and start going up the S: MAMEDE hill (which has some tight bends) until you find a straight piece of road that falls sharply down. At the end of that piece of straight road you will pass a further 3 small curves and a crossing with an arrow to the right indicating the QUINTA DO BARRIEIRO. There are now only 3 more kilometres to go (don't worry about not seeing any houses). Should you reach the village of ALVARRÕES, then you have passed the Quinta do Barrieiro and you should turn back. |
