Paradise found in one of the loveliest parts of Portugal
Paradise Found! It’s as simple as that, for here we have wonderfully converted 19th century granite house, set within 12 acres of land and vineyards with views to absolutely die for, as the gorgeous Marão hills fall steeply onto the water’s edge of the emblematic Douro River. This isn’t just Port wine country, it is also one of the most stunning regions in the whole of Portugal and everything we’ve just mentioned really does take your breadth away. As you arrive at Marco de Canavesses via the narrow winding roads, some are not for the faint of heart. The seven rooms plus the cottage (accommodating 2 people) are built on different levels as if to ensure everyone gets an equal views, and there are even a couple of terraces from which to enjoy it all in peace and tranquillity, preferably with a glass of Port in hand. We’ve almost forgotten about the interior, but even here, the Quinta do Cão does the place justice with an up to date decoration, which unlike many places in northern Portugal is neither heavy or dark. Public areas further take a billiards room with an independent entrance from the garden, plus living room with fireplace, DVD, video and Cable television. Yet with so much nature at one’s disposal, we suggest foregoing the TV and simply enjoy fine walks by the river, or the pontoon a bit fishing or simply recharging those batteries. Kids may even meet up with a host of farm animals in and around the house.

The Quinta do Cão is located on one of the Douro River's banks, cçose to the Marão Hills. So it brings together a variety of natural elements, such as water, rocks, cliffs, mountain, vineyards, farming and flora by the sloping hills. GUests can thus take advantage of all this natural beauty and scenery. This is a stress free environment. In the summer, guests can watch the boats sailing up and down the river, in the winter, contemplate the silence in front of a pleasant fireplace.
Throughout the Quinta you have pedestrian paths, lakes and a huge bird house. Last but not least, guests can take the chance to show their kids real poultry, rabbits, pheasants and sheep, vegetables, strawberries, oranges, kiwis, apples nuts and chestnuts. |

The Quinta is located near some of the main northern times, such as Oporto, Penafiel, Guimarães, Braga and Amarante.
You can get there easily by the A4 motorway (Exit Penafiel Sul/Entre-os-Rios), EN106 (in direction of Entre-os-Rios and Alpendurada) and the EN108 (in direction of Régua). You can drive on a road along the the Douro River.
The distance from Oporto to Quinta do Cão is some 58km and takes less than an hour. Simply Take the A4 motorway in direction of Vila Real, drive along 27km and then take the PenafielSul/Entre-os-Rois exit. Go onto the EN106 road in direction of Entre-os-Rios, which is some 15 km away. Carry on driving to Alpendurada (5 km away). Once in Alpendurada, take the EN108 in direction of Régua, and after driving about 6 km turn right into Lugar do Cão, in direction of the river and the Quinta do Cão. |
