The Serra da Estrela
Located in the interior of central Portugal, this beautiful area is in fact a protected National Park and a wonderful place to explore. In the summer it does not get too hot, and on a clear day you might even be able to see the sea over 150 kilometersaway! There is plenty to see and do. Dramatic crags and ravines makes this area a stunningly beautiful drive or hike. There are several walking trails. In winter this magical area is transformed into a glittering white kingdom.

The Serra da Estrela is also famous for its wonderful cheese called "Queijo da Serra", as well as its smoked sausages.

The Caramulo Mountains
The Serra do Caramulo is a place where nature still reigns supreme and man lives in function of it, never against it. It is a place full of surprises and magnificent views.
You will notice the green fields and woods, the gray of the granite, the bright colours of the heathers, genistas, oleanders or brooms and ancient small and picturesque villages.

The Serra do Açor
The beautiful mountains of the Serra do Açor are located to the west from the vast Serra da Estrela. In contrast with the highest mountain chain of Portugal, which consists mainly of granite, schist is the characteristic stone of the Serra do Açor. Schist was the basic building material for the picturesque houses of the many, formerly isolated villages and hamlets. The arborous vegetation is rich in majestic chestnut-trees, oak, pine, eucalyptus and some olive trees. Amongst the shrubs, heather, rosemary, yellow-flowered broom and furze, stand out. There is an abundance of water from streams that spring from the mountains.

Piódão
Piódão is without doubt one of the most beautiful villages of Portugal. It is classified as a Public Interest Monument, thus benefiting from some protection. But only after its integration in the project of Historical Villages of Portugal, did Piodão see its ensemble safeguarded.
All the houses with cement and tile roofing, are being converted in schist walls and roofs of slate. This project is now almost finished, so one can appreciate the architectoral patrimony of Piodão, and its reference as a heritage to preserve.

The Buçaco Forest
The Buçaco Forest is a dense wood, many centuries old, where the trees are of a gigantic stature and are rich in essences, fragrances and brilliance. This unique forest was first settled by Benedictine monks in the 6th Century. Later, it was administered by priests from Coimbra Cathedral, and a Papal edict of 1622 declared that women entering the forest would be excommunicated.

The ancient city of Conimbriga is the largest Roman settlement in Portugal and is well worth visiting on any tour of the country's central and northern regions. It is classified as a National Monument.

Viseu and Coimbra

Two of the most historic and attractive cities in central Portugal.

Santa Comba Dão
In the historic town of Santa Comba Dão the visitor can admire religiously preserved treasures of a more or less distant past. Of the different forms and styles throughout the ages can be included Baroque as its most marking period.
From this natural belvedere there are several beautiful views, which turn this tranquil town into a place well worth exploring.
The Bairro Alto (high quarter), with its winding alleys, charming traditional patios and streets with suggestive names, has a mediaeval atmosphere.
