Eight traditionally restored rooms in a country house that doubles as an organic farm hidden in a secret corner of Portugal, just 45 minutes from Lisbon yet in the middle of a Natural Park. This is a wonderful place for those who love the outdoors, nature and are happy to see the Reino’s two (well-behaved!) dogs roaming around.
Gabriela and Fernando finally stopped travelling in 1994 and bought the land where the Quinta do Rio Touro now sits. Careers in the diplomatic service had given them the idea of finally putting down roots and they couldn’t have chosen a more beautiful spot to do it. Throw in a National Park, a World Heritage Site, a dilapidated and run-down farm with beautiful terrain on the edge of the Serra da Sintra, years of careful restoration, beautiful beaches and a cute little village nearby and the Reino family have really come up trumps.
There are eight rooms in all; most of the suites have small lounge areas or terraces and are designed in such a way that if the only thing you want to do is get far, far away from it all then you should probably be coming here. The main house which includes the library, swimming pool and three of the suites also has a lovely lounge area with an open fire for the cooler months. Two further suites and a double bedroom can be found in the guest house, 100m away from the main building and immersed in the organic orchards. The guest house can also be booked in its entirety for those who want the entire family to appreciate the Quinta’s charms.
Gabriela and Fernando are perfectly happy if you with to pick your own organic breakfast from the thousands of fruit trees on the estate though if you prefer to sleep while someone else does the dirty work you can also enjoy your breakfast on the patio or on your balcony. The village of Azoia is just a five-minute walk away and plenty of restaurants that specialize in fish, shellfish and the barbeque-grilled meats typical of Portugal.

The Quinta do Rio Touro is just five minutes from Cabo da Roca, the most western point of the European continent. It is an area of real beauty and while the Quinta has everything you need to relax if you do choose to explore there are no shortages of possibilities.
Sintra (10 minutes), Cascais (15 minutes) and Lisbon (45 minutes) offer everything you could want in terms of culture and history. The Quinta is five minutes from the coast itself which offers an array of beaches including secluded sandy coves as well as wider bays with world-class surfing, kite-surfing and windsurfing points.
There are 8 golf courses in the area and 8 equestrian centres.
Lisbon has a variety of quarters (bairros) and attractions. Alfama, from the walls of the Castle São Jorge down to the Tejo is the oldest part. High above the city centre to the west of the Baixa is the so called Bairro Alto. This is the natural place to wind up at night. Well worth a morning or aftenoon stroll to explore. The Baixa is Europe's first example of Neoclasssical design and urban planning. The lower town is very much the heart of the city and main shopping area. Many of Lisbon's touristic attractions are located in Belém, amongst them are the Jerónimos Monastery, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Torre de Belém, the Belém Cultural Centre and Rua Vieira Portuense. The Belém Cultural Centre (CCB) is known as one of the great cultural centres in Europe, and a building of outstanding architecture: exhibitions, performing arts, restaurants, gardens and shops.
Also don't miss the famous flea market, Feira da Ladra, which spreads for two acres over the Campo de Santa Clara, at the eastern edge of Alfama on Tuesdays and Saturdays (7am-6pm). Sintra, a world heritage site, has all the charm of a fairy tale town and was once described by Lord Byron as "the glorious Eden". Sintra has beautiful palaces old residences to visit, particularly the Palácio da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Convento dos Capuchos, Palácio da Vila and luxuriant gardens of Monserrate.
Estoril and Cascais can be reached within 15 minutes from the Quinta. Estoril was once known as the "Portuguese Rivieira" with grandiose villas and luxury hotels whereas Cascais was an old fishing village with pretty houses by the sea and is now one of the more sophisticated areas in Portugal. Both villages are connected by a beautiful promenade along the coast.
