It is hard not to be impressed by the sights, sounds and smells that make up the Alentejo and there are surely few better places from which to enjoy them than the wonderful Quinta do Serafim - a secret best kept. This marvellous little collection of houses (three in all) goes back several centuries and until some 40 years ago were still operating as olive presses. Gradually they fell into decay until Domingas Vaito set about restoring them to their full beauty in 1994. After a lot research, and with a keen eye for detail, she set about restoring the houses to their original style and feel. Hence the liberal use of regional antique furniture, handicrafts and materials made of stone, iron and wood. The rustic feel is palpable, as exemplified by the 16th century oven for baking bread, but not to the exclusion of comfort and decoration of the highest order. This special and cosy atmosphere carries on outside, with each house having its own private terrace from which to take in the awe inspiring views of the Alentejo prairies, which seem to go on as far as the eye can see - a truly beautiful sight. Another of the high points here is the swimming pool, which is inserted into the natural surroundings and where even the colour of the water blends in perfectly.

ll	Tips & Getting There

From Lisbon: Take the A6 in direction of Évora and take the second exit for Évora. Keep on in direction of Estremoz and Évora Monte untill you reach a small green square where you turn following the signs for "Turismo Rural". Having passed the church turn left and from now on you just need to follow the signs that will lead you to the Quinta. Please call 966226321 if you have a problem.
