An atmospheric Monastery on the Santiago Route

Built on an old Roman settlement, this old convent and was once the court of the Kings of Castille and León during the middle ages and was rebuilt in the 16th century to include a Gothic Cloister. In fact, the ample enclosure still conserves the building corresponding to the old monastery itself, a declared National Historical Monument. Its orchard turned garden is also an open invitation to take long strolls. In fact being separated from the urban nucleus by the Carrión river, the monastery really is in a privileged zone, one that is ideal for excursions, horseriding, fishing and trekking – almost anything to do with nature and the earth. Its also an important base on the Route of Santiago.

This is a beautiful, historic hotel that is located just a 5 minute walk from the town of Carrion de los Condes. The hotel and town are best known as a popular stopping point for weary modern pilgrims traveling the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). Accommodations are very nice - no major frills - but the beauty and history of the hotel make it worth the stay, if for but a few nights. If you're doing the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, DEFINITELY make it a point to stop here for a day or two, and make an effort to trudge over the bridge that crosses the Rio de Carrion to the town for some sightseeng and pictures. (Several medieval-period churches in town.) The monastary/hotel itself has a church, Jacobean library, and a few archaological points of interest within its walls.

"The hotel has meeting/special events space, a small bar, a restaurant, and free wi-fi service. However, there is No laundry service or public use computers. If you need to do your laundry, you can try to see if there's a laundromat in town or else you'll have to wait until the next stop on your trip. If you want to use their free wi-fi service, you have to bring your own laptop. Other than that, a nice, historic, and rustic place to stay." M, UK
