Residence Hilda
Florence - Florence city - Florence
Cottage/Apartment
Number of rooms: 12

If you are undecided between a hotel in Florence and the greater privacy of an apartment then consider the Residence Hilda. These very smart suites located just 300 yards from the Duomo offer the best of both worlds. Residence Hilda opened in 2006 after a careful restoration of this historic Florentine palazzo lasting two years.

Next door to the apartments is the renowned Robiglio patisserie allowing you to begin the day in true Italian style with a lengthy cappuccino and pastry. The suites all have fully equipped kitchens, however, so you can decide when and where you want to take breakfast. In fact everything about Residence Hilda breathes freedom. Some people come for work and take advantage of the free internet access, others insist on a strict schedule of relaxation and find the apartments’ size (much larger than typical suites in a hotel for a similar price) more conducive to unwinding.

There are three types of suites starting with the standard at 50 square metres, ideal for two people with a double bedroom, kitchen/lounge area and bathroom. The Superior suites are a little larger than the standard and include a double sofa bed allowing the apartment to cater for up to four. The Deluxe suite is also designed for up to four and is the largest of the three types at 65 metres square. This suite also has a dining room and is that penthouse feel with views across those tiled rooftops of Florence.

For us, two things really stood out about these apartments. The first is the position, lying just 50 yards from Brunelleschi’s Ospedale degli Innocenti, a landmark in Renaissance architecture, and 300 yards from both the Accademia, housing Michelangelo’s David, and the Cathedral or Duomo of Florence with its stunning and emblematic dome, another of Brunelleschi’s masterpieces. In short the whole of Renaissance Florence is at your feet including some of the less tourist orientated restaurants, allowing you to experience some genuine Florentine cuisine.

The second thing that we liked was the apartments’ honest price/quality ratio. Smart and interesting hotels in Florence are hard to find and even when you can find them they are often overpriced. These suites provide a very reasonable way to stay in the city as well as benefiting from more space (each apartment has a sitting room and decent-sized bathroom). The décor is smart but with plenty of natural woods and different shades of marble to add natural and homely tones and that indeed is what the overall effect is; a stylish home away from home in the heart of Florence, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

ll Activities
If you are driving the best thing to do is put your keys on the table and forget about the car for a while. Everywhere you need to get to in Florence is within walking distance and much of it is actually right on your doorstep. Within five minutes’ walk you can visit Fra Angelico’s stunningly simple yet moving frescoes in the San Marco Museum, across the piazza from the Accademia. The duomo, Giotto’s bell tower and the Baptistery with Ghiberti’s revolutionary bronze doors are all less than 5 minutes away and from there the glitzy Via Calzaioli leading down towards the Uffizi Gallery and the Ponte Vecchio.

Plenty of excellent restaurants about as these apartments are on the “right” side of the city by which we mean a little away from the sterile and over touristy sections and more towards where real Florentines live.

ll Tips & Getting There
If you arrive by train the apartments are close enough to walk without bags (15-20 mins) though plenty of taxis wait outside Florence’s main train station, Santa Maria Novella, if you have luggage.

If you are driving we would recommend speaking directly to the manager of the apartments a few days before you arrive as the suites are utterly central and Florence’s city government does employ quite strict rules regarding what cars can and cannot pass in certain zones. The manager will have all of the latest information available regarding traffic restrictions that may be in force.

ll Client Comments
Please feel free to send us your personal hotel review on this hotel. You may wonder why all the assessments we have on line are positive. Well, apart from the simple fact that we try to include only what we consider to be the best accommodations, there’s another important reason to bear in mind. Any hotel that receives 3 negative feedbacks is automatically taken out of our selection.
