Tasteful Marrakech Riad with elegant design
The Riad Ariha may be a century old and renovated using authentic building materials, but there’s nothing old fashioned about it. In fact, its simple lines and restrained decoration give it a rather Zen like quality, and certainly the Ariha is a perfect setting to relax in old Marrakech. Though located in the Medina, it is actually some 15 minutes by foot from the main square of Jemma el Fna, though in many ways this is actually a blessing. For one, it makes it less prone to throngs of tourists and therefore the feel is very authentic.
Everything is clearly defined here and, as is fundamental in Morocco, spotlessly clean. On entering, we come up against an inner courtyard with a small pool in the middle decorated in rose petals. It’s a marvellously refreshing sight, especially after coming back from a hard days’ work seeing the sights.
The rooms are pretty relaxing too! All five are large and beautifully decorated with fine sheets and blankets, plus their own bathroom and shower. Everything combines with the modernity of minimalism and the beauty of Moroccan craftsmanship, where little details such as the use of stucco abound.
Clean lines, a sensation of spaciousness and light and fine terrace which is great for taking breakfast or reading a book further make for a peaceful stay at the Riad Ariha.
Finally, the roof terrace with a lovely view of the Atlas mountains in the distance is a great place to relax |

As the riad is situated in the medina (old city), it is easier to find your way by simply asking for the general area in which the riad is situated—Sidi bin Slimane, which is near Riad Larouss. Ask for the parking at the masjid Nasser (the mosque) at Sidi bin Slimane.
Follow the signs for the Riad Ariha.
A taxi would then drop you off at an open space with stores and a mosque on the right-hand side, and a school on the left-hand side. This open space narrows into a road. With the mosque on your right take this road and walk straight ahead. It opens out into another square—there are orange walls in front of you and a mosque with wall fountain to your left. Take the right-hand lane where the stores are. If you look up, you will see an arch with an open window and green mosaic tiles.
Go under this arch, the local hammam will be on your right. At the end of this street, turn left. Straight ahead of you is another large mosque with a wall fountain on the left wall, the road zig-zags towards the right., go under an arch, keep to the right (do not go straight ahead). You will see a sign for Dar Zellije, a restaurant not far from us.
You will go past some small stores, a téléboutique on your right, then a wall fountain on the left from which people fetch water. On your right is the restaurant Dar Zellij with a large black door. Keep going straight and turn right about 50 yards on. Walk a little way, then the road turns left 90º under a covered archway. Keep going straight until you’re out of the covered archway and you see another open arch ahead of you with a sign for Riad Ariha and a corner house with dark yellow walls. Turn left here which is Derb Ahmed el Borj. The Riad Ariha is the first door on the right, number 90.
It should take about 5 minutes by foot.
If ever you are not sure of the way, just ask people for Sidi bin Slimane or Nasser Mosque. The Riad Ariha is located between Bab Taghout (pronounced: Ta’zut—the ’ being a kind of gurgling with your tonsils) and Riad Larouss.
